Ever watched “Life After Humans” on the History Channel and just imagined how you’d try to cope, given the chance of living in it? Would you choose to live your days peacefully, just trying your best to stay alive? Or would you try reviving human civilization? Our protagonists choose the latter in Dr. Stone, an anime about a post-apocalyptic world.
With the anime premiering in 2019, the series now has two seasons ( with another one in the works) plus two specials. The studios have released them quite straightforwardly, so it shouldn’t be difficult to follow, but allow us to show you a proper guide on how to watch this series accurately with a timeline and a brief summary of each item on the list.
HOW TO WATCH DR. STONE
Dr, Stone Quick Watch Order
Dr. Stone (Season 1)
Struck by a flash of green light, the human race became petrified in just a day. After 3,700 years, Senkuu, a high school boy with unmatched intellect, awakens to the post-apocalyptic world where it seems he’s the sole survivor. Determined to save all humanity from their stony graves, Senkuu sets out to develop the perfect cure for petrification and revive civilization at the same time.
The path to revival is not an easy one. This might be the same Earth as 3,700 years ago, but the environment has changed enough that nothing is certain. In a world filled with new dangers, our brainy hero must plan his moves carefully—lest someone decides to stand in their way.
The first few episodes of season 1 show us Senkuu’s process of developing said cure for petrification and it also serves as an introduction to the majority of the characters of the whole series. Senkuu first revives those he believes would be of great help in his mission: Ooki Taiju, his friend from the same school; and the Strongest High Schooler Primate, Shishiou Tsukasa, who later becomes the main antagonist of the first two seasons. He then stumbles upon a human village with 40 members and tries to convince them to ally with him.
We do get conflicts between Senkuu’s company and Tsukasa in season 1, but like in the first two major parts of the manga, this focuses more on Senkuu gathering his allies and protecting themselves from Tsukasa’s group’s attacks. We also get to find out here how it was possible for other human beings to have existed after the big green and how they were able to cope in their new environment.
Their road to solving the petrification phenomena also doesn’t come until much, much later.

Dr. Stone: Stone Wars (Season 2)
With all of his new allies getting upgrades after season 1, Senkuu and company are now ready to face off with Tsukasa’s group.
Majorly adapted from the final half of the third part of the manga, Season 2 starts off with Senkuu finally developing a working communication device he uses to contact Taiju and Yuzuriha who were sent to keep tabs on Tsukasa’s Empire. Interestingly enough, the events aren’t as action-filled in the anime despite it being the finale to Tsukasa’s opposition, but they do make it up with exhilarating drama. There are so many twists and turns here in season 2 that you’ll be left wondering who’ll betray who next. More additions to Senkuu’s fun list of revived modern items have also found their way from the manga into season 2’s screen, which is always a treat.
This season ends with Senkuu setting out to crack the petrification code, turning ala One Piece.

Dr Stone: Ryusui (Special)
In order to solve the mystery of the phenomena that befell them all, Senkuu and company need to find a capable captain to sail them to where it all started first.
This is an almost hour-long canon special that bridges the second and the upcoming third season. In this, Senkuu revives Ryuusui, Japan’s best ship captain pre-petrification, and asks him for his help. Ryuusui was born into a wealthy family that was big in the marine industry.he has been around ships from a young age and by the time he reached middle school he was already sailing across the world with his own ship. With a personality akin to Senkuu’s and a good head on his shoulders, he adds a new kind of eccentricity to the group, and his introduction was so well-executed that his appearance in season 3 has become widely anticipated.

If you’re into the whole post-apocalyptic shebang, then Dr. Stone is definitely one of the best of the bunch. Although it does look daunting, considering the scientific touch of it all, thanks to the magic of shounen, it’s really not hard to understand. Manga fans of the series would also enjoy the adaptations because the studio made sure that it followed the original plot faithfully. Dr. Stone is available to watch on Crunchyroll and Netflix (depending on where you live). As for the specials, the recap is available on YouTube, but Dr Stone: Ryuusui is only available on Crunchyroll.

Conclusion
On the topic of the manga, those who can’t wait for the release of the third season are all welcome to read from the source. The manga concluded back in March of 2022 with 26 volumes and 233 chapters in total. It also has an official English release under Shounen Jump under the same name.
Dr. Stone still has a lot of viable content studios can use for adaptations, so we should be expecting a couple more specials (and a movie, perhaps?) in the future along with the upcoming third season which will be released in April of 2023. Rejoice, Dr. Stone fans! This franchise might just be around for us for a longer time. And if you’re curious for more anime to watch but confused where to start, we have more anime watch orders for you!
