Series
The arrangement of the series here will be in chronological order. Every series here will be explained, and will tell you which are canon here and which are not.
1. Dragon Ball
Airing Dates: February 26, 1986, to April 19, 1989
Episodes: 153
This is the very first anime adaptation of Dragon Ball. This anime series is where everything began about the journey of Goku, the main character. Goku is commonly seen as an adult in every media. However, in this anime, it follows the childhood days of Goku and his antics with other characters.
Summary/Synopsis:
Son Goku is a young boy living in the woods all alone and there is a girl named Bulma who accidentally ran towards Goku while she was searching for “Dragon Balls”. The “Dragon Balls” are a set of magical objects that can grant you a wish when you collect all 7 of them. Goku coincidentally possesses a Dragon Ball but won’t let go of it when Bulma asks for it. Because of it, they made a deal to share the power of the Dragon Ball. Then they set off on a journey.
2. Dragon Ball Z
Airing Dates: April 26, 1989, to January 31, 1996
Episodes: 291
Dragon Ball Z is the most popular series of the entire Dragon Ball franchise. This series has shaped the childhood of the majority of anime fans in general. There is no doubt that this particular series has spread the beauty of Anime internationally. So if you are curious to watch the series that made Anime popular in the whole world, here’s a short synopsis.
Summary/ Synopsis:
In this timeline, Goku is already a father living a peaceful life. However, there is a mysterious enemy named Raditz who is presenting himself as Goku’s long-lost brother. He reveals Goku’s past about him being a warrior from a Saiyan race. Moreover, he was supposed to destroy the planet when he was young but had amnesia due to an accident. Raditz warns Goku and his friends about the threat of an upcoming war on Earth. Thus, this begins the awesome and iconic fights of this series.
3. Dragon Ball Z Kai
Airing Dates: April 5, 2009 – March 27, 2011, and April 6, 2014 – June 8, 2015
Episodes: 167
Dragon Ball Z Kai is basically a remake or a remastered version of Dragon Ball Z. They have the same exact scenes that are being re-scanned for providing a better anime experience for the newer fans. In other words, this is not a new show or anything. It is just a higher resolution version of Dragon Ball Z with some parts cut down and higher animation quality. As much as I want to put a synopsis, you can just read it in the Dragon Ball Z category.
4. Dragon Ball GT
Airing Dates: February 7, 1996 – November 19, 1997
Episodes: 64
Here’s a little fact for you. In this franchise, the author originally wanted to make Gohan (Goku’s son) the main protagonist for this series. However, he believed that Gohan is not suited for it because Goku’s strong desire in fighting will easily outshine Gohan’s overall personality for the story. The series is not canon to the original source material and the author is not entirely involved in the writing of the story.
Summary/Synopsis:
Pilaf is on the verge of starting world domination. However, he was interrupted by Goku. With Pilaf’s Black Star Dragon Balls that are more powerful than normal, Pilaf messes up his wish and turns Goku into a child accidentally. Goku discovers their threat and sets off on an adventure to save their planet.
5. Dragon Ball Super
Airing Dates: February 7, 1996, to November 19, 1997
Episodes: 64
The comeback of releasing another franchise for almost 18 years. With its release, it attracts newcomers and the old fans are once again given a chance to return and watch this recent Dragon Ball series.
Story/Synopsis:
The story takes place after the events of Dragon Ball Z seven years later. They live a peaceful life. However, the God of Destruction Beerus arrives on their planet with his unknown objectives.
6. Super Dragon Ball Heroes
Airing Dates: July 1, 2018 up to Present
Just like Dragon Ball GT, Super Dragon Ball Heroes is also not canon. This is a mini-series that is mainly used for promotional purposes of a video game and trading cards. Unfortunately, it is inaccessible and only exclusive in Japan.
Movies
Take note that this list is in chronological order for you to have an overall insight as to what order to watch to keep you on track with the Dragon Ball’s story. Each title elaborated here provides a substantial amount of information to genuinely guide you and gives you options of what to watch among these movies and what you can skip among them without affecting your experience in enjoying the franchise as a whole.
This list will be listed in chronological order so you won’t get lost in the track of following the story.
7. Dragon Ball: Curse of the Blood Rubies (1986)
The movie is basically a set of stories alternatively compared to the original episodes. This is a compilation of the first arc where Goku meets Bulma and Master Roshi for the first time. However, the difference between the movie and the series is that the movie has added a character King Gurumes that doesn’t exist in the original series.
It is entirely optional to watch this movie as the anime already provided you with the contents of the arc that is also the entire content of this movie.
8. Dragon Ball: Sleeping Princess in Devil’s Castle (1987)
Just like the previous movie, this movie is also a cinematic retelling of the events about Goku’s early days when he met Krillin and Master Roshi for the first time, which can be entirely seen on the original Dragon Ball series. So it is up to you whether to watch this or not. What matters is that you have fun doing so.
9. Dragon Ball: Mystical Adventure (1988)
The movie is just about another retelling of the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournaments and Red Ribbon arc from the original series. Goku and Krillin are attending the tournament. Meanwhile, Bulma is searching for the Dragon Balls hidden by the host of the tournament.
Mystical Adventure has more leeway with how the story was written because this includes characters from the other arcs and gives them different roles and motivation compared to the original series. Moreover, just like the previous two movies mentioned above, this has alternate versions of some events in the source material. So this would be a good option for the fans to see something new to look at.
10. Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone (1989)
Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone served as somewhat of a prequel for the Dragon Ball Z series. The movie has a simple premise. There is an alien named Garlic Jr. whose desire is to avenge his father because he was not chosen as the God of Earth and Kami was chosen instead.
Because of its popularity before, Garlic Jr. made it into being a full arc in the anime series. And for those curious, this movie took place in the anime in between the Namek and Android arcs.
11. Dragon Ball Z: Bardock – The Father of Goku (1990)
Just as the title suggests, it is about the father of Goku, Bardock, whose mission is to protect his son Goku (no pun intended) if ever the Saiyans are facing off Frieza. This movie technically served as the prequel to the entire Dragon Ball franchise. Hence, many plot elements here are crucial for the lore of Goku’s origins.
Because of Bardock’s tale which left an emotional impact on the fandom, Bardock became so popular that Toriyama himself made him from an original anime character into an official canon character.
12. Dragon Ball: Episode of Bardock (2011)
Unlike the previous Bardock film, this is a spinoff where the plot is altered. Many Dragon Ball fans were excited to have the first Dragon Ball related anime releasing for the first time in 13 years. However, just like mentioned, this is just a spinoff of Bardock’s story.
Originally, he was supposed to be dead when he was attacked by Frieza. However, they altered the storyline here where he was returned to the past meeting Frieza’s ancestor and fights him to protect the planet he is in.
13. Dragon Ball Z: The World’s Strongest (1990)
There is a pair of mad scientists who broke out of the prison. With their plan of world domination, Dr. Urio also plans to steal the world’s strongest man which is Goku. However, Goku and his friends are there to put their plans to a halt.
This is a great movie for people who are interested in consuming more of what Dragon Ball has to provide. The movie is notably known for being action-packed despite its superficial plot. If you are an action enthusiast, this would be a good option to watch.
14. Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might (1990)
A mysterious device has crashed on Earth. Meanwhile, Goku and his friends are camping in the forest where the device has crashed and it caused wildfire, unable to stop and leaving the forest in ruins. Turles and the other space pirates planted a seed of the Tree of Might. It gives them immense power when it drains the life force of Earth. After Goku knew about these, he won’t let them do as they please.
The main villain of the movie is Goku’s evil counterpart. That alone could be a good hook for the fans as it intrigues their curiosities between the rivalry of Goku and Turles.
15. Dragon Ball Z: Lord Slug (1991)
Lord Slug is a space pirate who wants to wipe out the entire life of the planet Earth. Upon his arrival on Earth, he has a castle in the form of a small planet. Meanwhile, Goku and Krillin sense it as a powerful entity. After these events occurred, Lord Slug commenced his attack whereas Goku and Krillin are on the go to save the planet.
Though the plot may sound very generic and is easily forgettable, this would also be a good thing to watch if you just want to take a break from the anime series.
16. Dragon Ball Z: The History of Trunks (1993)
Future Trunks finally got his TV special in a movie format! The story takes place in a future alternate timeline where the androids have successfully subjugated the world. Because of these events, Trunks must figure out a way to change the future.
The setting of this movie is surprisingly grim and dark with some depressing vibes to deliver because of its apocalyptic setting showcasing the failure of the saviors. The movie would provide you with a fresh experience because of its shockingly dark theme.
17. Dragon Ball Z: Cooler’s Revenge (1991)
The movie takes place after the fight between Goku and Frieza. Frieza’s brother, Cooler, now has a violent desire for vengeance on Goku for killing his brother, Frieza.
Because of how they put additional details about the main villain from the anime, the movie has done well for exploring the lore of one of the most memorable and iconic villains, Frieza. If you are more interested in the lore behind Frieza, this would be a must-watch movie to fully grasp and explore the overall characterization of Frieza together with his brother.
18. Dragon Ball Z: Super Android 13! (1992)
Super Android 13! Follows the events during Dr. Gero’s murder by Android 17 and 18. The androids 13, 14, and 15 are set out to kill Goku. The 3 androids were activated as a fail-safe. And this starts out the fight between Goku with his allies and the 3 androids.
This is the first time where they show Goku, Vegeta, and Trunks fighting together. Their lineup sounds interesting enough to compel you to watch the movie which is very worth it, because it is mostly action-oriented.
19. Dragon Ball Z: The Return of Cooler (1992)
The movie is set as the sequel to Cooler’s Revenge (1991). Goku and Cooler are off to face each other one more time due to Cooler being resurrected by the big Gete Star, giving him an opportunity for his vengeance one more time. However, Goku won’t allow him to easily do it.
Aside from being a sequel to Cooler’s Revenge, there is an additional event happening in this movie, which is the cinematic debut of Vegeta. Vegeta is widely loved by fans due to his characterization. Therefore, this would be a good movie to watch Vegeta and Cooler’s fight.
20. Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan (1993)
Vegeta is currently the prince of Saiyans and is hoping to become the king of the remaining Saiyans. However, upon his arrival, he realizes the true plans of a universal conquest started by Broly and they are on a mission to stop him.
Broly is one of the most iconic and strongest villains in the Dragon Ball universe. The movie is considered by many as the best Dragon Ball movie because of its compelling story and villain that raises up your blood because of the hype he brings in their fights. You would be missing something great if you haven’t watched this movie yet.
21. Dragon Ball Z: Bojack Unbound (1993)
While Goku is dead after sacrificing himself to stop Cell, Mr. Satan invites everyone to another Tenka’ichi Budokai tournament. Without their awareness, Bojack escapes from the prison and competes in the tournament.
Unlike the usual movies where they fight with only two factions, this movie provides a fresh take of having a tournament arc instead. Gohan is the main character of the movie because Goku is still dead and they are to defeat the main villain, Bojack, without the original main character.
22. Dragon Ball Z: Broly’s Second Coming (1994)
After Broly’s defeat in seven years, he sets out to come back with vengeance against Goku. However, Goku is still dead. Due to his absence, he is forced to face Gohan, Goten, Trunks, and Videl instead.
This sequel of Broly’s movie is the 2nd part of the Broly movie trilogy. If you were a fan of Broly, this would be a good show to consume for more Broly screen time. However, this left an unpleasant taste to the fans because of how they wasted Broly’s tragic characterization, turning him from a well-written villain, into a one-dimensional revenge-driven character. But that doesn’t mean it’s a bad movie, it just has a different vibe from the prequel.
23. Dragon Ball Z: Bio-Broly (1994)
The finale of the Broly trilogy, but this time, Broly becomes a sludge due to his DNA being used in an experiment.
The movie was released 6 months after the previous one. However, the movie somehow amplifies the disappointment of the fans because of how they entirely wasted the characterization of Broly. Instead of having an intense climax for their buildups with great potential, it descends its quality, unfortunately. But this would still be an option to watch if you want to complete the trilogy.
24. Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn (1995)
Since Goku’s death against Cell, he’s in the custody of the afterlife. He’s been competing in martial arts tournaments for the undead. Meanwhile, there is a custodian who transformed into a fat, yellow demon causing chaos in the afterlife. Soon, Goku faces the demon but can’t defeat it no matter what he does. Here, we witness the usage of fusions almost throughout the entire movie.
The Fusion is a popular concept of the Dragon Ball series in which two characters will fuse into one stronger fighter. As the title suggests, the movie is somewhat of a delight for fans because of the fusion between the characters.
25. Dragon Ball Z: Wrath of the Dragon (1995)
The movie is set after the defeat of Majin Buu in Dragon Ball Z. After having a short peaceful time, Hirudegarn is another threat to them. Afterward, they enlist the legendary hero, Tapion, from planet Konats to assist them and save the planet.
Tapion’s debut in this movie gave hype to the viewers. However, he is never seen again in the series despite his epic debut. Moreover, they showed for the first time a cool ability from Goku where he can summon a huge dragon which was left unexplained.
26. Dragon Ball GT: A Hero’s Legacy (1997)
The story is about Goku’s descendant, young Goku Jr. He learns about the power of the Dragon Balls and decides to set off on a journey to find the 7 Dragon Balls to save his grandfather, Pan. For those who are not aware yet, Pan is Goku’s granddaughter. Therefore, this is 4 generations after Goku.
The setting might compel the viewers because everything is set in the future. It shows numerous scenarios about the future of the Dragon Balls and the Saiyan race. However, this is unfortunately a non-canon movie which will not matter and won’t affect the entire story of the series.
27. Dragon Ball Z: Battle of the Gods (2013)
Seven years after the events of Dragon Ball Z, they are in a temporary peaceful situation. But their peace didn’t last long when the God of Destruction, Beerus, awakened from his long slumber to search for the Super Saiyan God. As Beerus poses a threat to Goku and his allies, he then decides to fight Beerus and must learn a new Saiyan Form that can defeat a god.
This is the first official Dragon Ball movie to be released after ten long years. Just like the usual movies of Dragon Ball, this movie is the Beerus arc from Dragon Ball Super. The movie version is more condensed and focuses on important parts of the arc with higher quality on their fight animations. This would be a good option to watch because this is one of the most iconic fights of Dragon Ball’s entire franchise in the best quality possible.
28. Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F (2015)
After Frieza’s defeat, his remaining armies have successfully collected the Dragon Balls to resurrect Frieza. Just when the earth was finally at peace, it was short-lived due to Frieza’s resurrection. Just when Frieza has resurrected, he realizes Goku’s strength has improved drastically in which it surpasses Majin Buu’s strength. However, with his strong hatred and desire for vengeance towards Goku, he trained for months to face him off again.
Frieza, being one of the most iconic villains in the entire franchise, it is no wonder that it will compel the old fans into watching it despite the basic revenge-driven plot. With their attempt to give the fans the opportunity to see the iconic rivalry between Goku and Frieza once again, this would be a great movie to watch. Additionally, the movie’s entire content is also about Frieza’s resurrection arc in Dragon Ball Super. But the pacing and quality are way better than the movie. So if you like to enjoy Frieza’s arc in Dragon Ball Super to the fullest, the movie would be a good option.
29. Dragon Ball Super: Broly (2018)
King Vegeta has noticed a baby whose power and strength is superior to his own son, believing that he will surpass his son, Vegeta, someday. Due to this, the king sends Broly to a planet that is in dismal emptiness. Broly’s father followed him but his ship crashed then entrapped them for years without knowing when they would be saved. Back to the present, Goku and Vegeta are in training but are interrupted when Frieza appears before them. Surprisingly, Frieza became allies with Broly and his father. Another legendary battle has yet to commence as Goku and Vegeta are about to face off against Broly.
The comeback of one of the most iconic villains, Broly, has once again given the opportunity to provide the fans a newer and fresh fight with newer animation technologies. The new Broly is an improvement of the original Broly movie trilogy decades ago.
Though the original Broly was a memorable and iconic movie, many fans were disappointed with how they wasted Broly’s potential as a character in the second and third parts of the trilogy. However, this movie is the redemption of their past mistake where you can see the drastic improvement of writing and the overall quality of the story revolving around Broly. For the old fans out there, this has yet to be one of the best movies to watch because of the iconic villain Broly’s comeback aside from their improvement from the original.
Live-Action
Some people might say that having a live-action from a manga or anime is a manifestation of how popular and successful the franchise is. The concept of live-action adaptation in anime has unfortunately a bad reputation due to how the majority of the shows failed to manage and capture the art of 2-dimensional animations being brought to life, which is entirely understandable because anime and real-life are entirely different.
In the Dragon Ball franchise’s case, they have made several live-action adaptations. It is no wonder for these to exist due to their insane popularity around the world. Here is the list of the live-action adaptation.
30. Dragon Ball: Fight For Victory, Son Goku! (1990)
The premise of this is basically the beginning of Dragon Ball. The young warrior Son Goku is on a quest of searching and acquiring the seven magical orbs called Dragon Ball. Along the way to his quest, he beats up the evil guys who also have the same goals as him.
A relatively old movie and the first known Dragon Ball live-action adaptation. Because of Dragon Ball’s popularity, Korea has made the first attempt to make a live-action adaptation. Though the budget is not that of a large-scale, this movie is the most faithful in following the original source material compared to the other two.
32. Dragon Ball: The Magic Begins (1991)
Despite being unofficial, Taiwan had made the second attempt to make a live-action adaptation of Dragon Ball. The synopsis is practically the same as the original Dragon Ball so there is nothing different to compare with the original.
The movie was low-budget and with its bad review, it might ironically give you the enjoyment of it as being a so-bad-that-it’s-good vibe. This ensures that you cannot enjoy it as an actual Dragon Ball movie, but you will more likely enjoy this as a fan-made parody.
33. Dragon Ball Evolution
Dragon Ball Evolution is the first western live-action adaptation of Dragon Ball, and it left a horrible taste to the viewers. Even if the Americans are known for their high-budget and next-level films, Dragon Ball Evolution left an appalling overall experience to the fans.
The movie is generally criticised for many aspects such as the horrible acting, convoluted story, unpleasing CGI, and especially it barely reminds the viewers that it is based on Dragon Ball. If you are planning to watch this, you might enjoy this not as a movie, but as looking for their attempt in adapting the popular Dragon Ball franchise.
Conclusion
If you are starting to get into the franchise or if you are already a fan for a long time, you might be surprised by the amount of series, movies, spinoffs, and specials they have released. Though in the first impression of seeing all of the lists, it might sound convoluted because of the vast amount of media to consume in order to fully watch the Dragon Ball franchise is indeed hard to follow.
However, if you are deeply interested in the story, the lists on this article will make you realize that many of their contents are composed of spinoffs, remakes, and non-canon specials which are entirely not relevant for the main story.
At the end of the day, the absolute way of watching the Dragon Ball franchise is based on your preference. Whether you are watching it chronologically, in release order, or just watching highlight clips of the fights, what matters is how you fully enjoy the series and you are able to have fun with fellow people in the fandom talking about Dragon Ball in general.
