31+ BEST Action Manga (Recommendations)

Updated May 12, 2024 by testing

My first taste of the world of animanga has been mostly shounen; where the meaning of badassery was intertwined with hard work, protecting those that are important to you, and high quality action!

While that kickstarted my otaku journey, I couldn’t help but be attached with newer japanese comics or even non-shounen ones that bring in the kicks and punches with a heartfelt story.

Action manga has changed my and a lot of people’s lives and opened the doors for us to explore even more different manga and anime out there; making them such timeless inspirations!

That being said, I only speak for my own tastes. So instead of forcing you to listen to how much I love action manga, I’ll just let you experience them yourself via these recommendations!

Let me share the 32 Best Action Manga to Read from the oldest one I know to the latest!

And what of course can be older than the father of The Big Three and of all shounen animanga itself? That’s right, the first on the list is Dragon Ball!

Originally, the story is about Son Goku; a young boy with a tail living in a mountain far from civilization whose adopted grandfather died and left him a mystical glass ball with four stars inside.

This boy meets Bulma, a techno-genius teenage girl, on her way to collect seven of the said mystical balls that can grant any one wish that the collector desires. Unable to give up the four-star ball, Goku joins her adventure in collecting the spheres known as the Dragon Balls.

Dated gags aside—this is the ’80s afterall— one can say that this series walked so the succeeding shounen manga can run! And run straight to our hearts it did, thanks Dragon Ball!

Next on the list. We have a famous meme from an also famous and long-running sequel. Take note that all of the protagonists here belong to one family and are brilliantly named in a way where they’ll still have the titular nickname, Jojo.

The beginnings of this historical series is set in late 19th-century England that follows the young son of a wealthy landowner named Jonathan Joestar or, of course, Jojo.

The MC lives a carefree life with his father until one Dio Brando becomes his adoptive brother and eternal enemy—emphasizing the word “eternal” here because trust me that’s important.

Living up to the title of “bizarre,” Dio would try everything in his power to usurp Jonathan as heir, even turning to, surprise surprise, supernatural means.

Jonathan then embarks on an adventure and meets allies, all the while training in preparation to challenge Dio once again.

What? You need a grittier, darker, and more tragic manga? Oh, you’re gonna love this one!

Berserk is a story of a 24-year-old man named Guts, a.k.a. the “Black Swordsman, who’s relentlessly followed by demonic beings and loads of bad luck while burdened with a tragic past.

The protagonist is reasonably out for revenge for himself and a loved one; searching for a “former friend” who betrayed him for selfish reasons.

Aided by his giant sword and monstrous strength, he continues his quest for blood.

With more than 1,000 chapters, Monkey D. Luffy and his pirate crew bring smiles and tears with their adventure on the great seas; remembered for the characters and amazing action that crowned it as one of The Big Three.

This tale starts with Gol D. Roger, known as the “Pirate King,” announcing before his execution that a legendary treasure called One Piece can be claimed by anybody who finds it.

Like any good pirate story, these very words instigated the Great Age of Pirates where many adventurers tried their luck and failed. And like any good shounen manga, a young man yet again challenges the impossible!

Twenty-two years later, fantasy-fruit-powered stretchy Luffy collects his boat, gathers a ragtag crew with questionable quirks and personalities, and sets out across the Grand Line to be the new Pirate King and to GET. THAT. GOLD!

Another long-running shounen follows this list; but unlike One Piece, this one’s reason for being unfinished is due to its many hiatus that ranges from 9 weeks to 4 years! No jokes here, some fans actually started calling it Hiatus x Hiatus.

While the breaks were reasonable, the non-dying fandom is a testament to how amazing the story is. You know a series slaps if not even being away for years takes its fans away!

Anywho, here you’ll meet Gon Freecss who gets fascinated by why his father would rather be a full-time Hunter rather than, well, be a father.

While I, for one, think this deadbeat deserves more than a dropkick, the 12-year-old genuinely wants to find him.

Hunters in this vast fantasy world are people who have a license to and may be sponsored to fight monsters and discover mystical and unreachable places. But before all that, an individual should first pass the deadly Hunter Exams.

This is a story about Gon and the people he meets on understanding what it takes to be a Hunter in this dangerous world.

Going back to the historical and martial arts genre, this series creatively retells the tale of a Japanese sword saint and legendary swordsman.

But before that, he was the violent Takezō Shinmen who was never trusted by his hometown and only had one friend, Matahachi Hon’ide, whom he enlisted in the Toyotomi army with.

These two flee as they face defeat at the Battle of Sekigahara; upon their separation right after, Takezō goes back home to inform Matahachi’s family that he’s alive.

Due to his reputation, the people are convinced that he killed Matahachi instead and is made a wanted man for it. He eventually gets caught and left to die until Takuan Soho finds him.

This monk christens him with a new name to avoid pursuit by the authorities, starting the legend of Musashi Miyamoto.

Also from The Big Three, we have ramen-loving, loud-mouthed, gutsy ninja Naruto Uzumaki who wants nothing more but to be Hokage—the “strongest” ninja of the village— to prove himself to those who despise him.

Hated since birth due to the sealed Nine-Tailed Demon Fox inside him, and just because the villagers want to be petty to a literal child, he finds difficulty in cooperating with others and leaves a trail of pranks wherever he goes.

Getting assigned to Team 7 under Kakashi Hatake, Naruto is forced to get along with his old classmates: the intelligent Sakura Haruno and the aloof Sasuke Uchiha, top of their class and his self-proclaimed rival.

This manga features Naruto’s difficult journey on his way to the top— not to be confused with Boruto’s dad in that Boruto series, of course (please don’t check that other goat out until you’re done with Naruto, thank you).

This series takes us to a steampunk world where alchemy, partnered with patterns called transmutation circles, is a known science that can manipulate and modify matter according to an alchemist’s will.

While creating anything you want seems like a dream come true, alchemists are bound by the Law of Equivalent Exchange where you need to give something of equal value in return for anything you want to make.

And we all know what that means! If you’re itching to make a Frankenstein monster, you’re gonna have to get the parts somewhere, preferably at least in a legal way.

Enter brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric who try to revive the mother they lost. As expected, this results in a tragedy; Edward loses his left leg and Alphonse his entire body.

Hey, don’t worry! Edward eventually sacrifices his right arm to transfer his brother’s soul in a suit of armor and they embark on a journey to find the Philosopher’s Stone to fix things. We’re all good here!

But yikes, creating another human right at the start? Makes me wonder how many people tried to create a live human in this series. Probably not a famous thought, right?

The last member of The Big Three brings us high school student Ichigo Kurosaki who can see spirits of the dead (like most of us living in this haunted house of mine; yeah, he’s really not that special).

What he may be special for, however, is getting unintentionally recruited as a Soul Reaper after a series of chaotic events brought by an intruder named Rukia Kuchiki—a Soul Reaper— and a soul-consuming evil spirit called a Hollow.

This meeting, unbeknownst to both of them, is the start of a supernatural action-filled story that will prove important to the interconnected worlds; and seeing how well-known Bleach is, in our world too!

In this series, the grim reaper himself—cleverly named Shinigami— established the Death Weapon Meister Academy that trains Meisters and Demon Weapons to work together for a specific goal that will defeat evil.

The partners are to tag-team in collecting 99 souls of wicked humans and 1 witch. If the demon partner consumes these in that order, the Meister will be able to create a “Death Scythe” worthy of being wielded by Shinigami.

Aiming for this are partners Maka Albarn and Demon Weapon Soul Eater “Soul” Evans. With their friends, rivals, and everyone else, these two are to find out that the world and the stakes are bigger than their academy.

If you feel like going for a full-on fun-filled parody, I totally recommend this samurai-vs-alien-ish series set in the Edo Period with a mischievous group that represents chaos itself.

Let’s make a roll call of the squad: a samurai who refuses to give up his wooden sword despite the ban, Gintoki Sakata; his self-proclaimed apprentice, Shinpachi Shimura; the alien, Kagura; and the dog, Sadaharu.

This gang tries to keep their business, Yorozuya, afloat as the conflict between the Shogunate and the aliens, Amanto, continues to make it difficult to have something to eat.

To be honest, there really isn’t a way to describe this manga at all, better to just dive in yourself. You’ll enjoy it, I promise!

Their peaceful lifestyle comes to a halt as a 60-meter titan peers its face beyond the wall and kicks a massive hole below, calling in the horrendous murderers to feast on humanity; one of which ate Eren’s mother as he flees.

Unlike Gintama though, this series makes a balance of taking itself seriously as a fighting manga while subverting the most cliche hero tropes done in almost every superhero story!

Saitama is now at the pinnacle of strength and considers himself a hero for fun. After meeting a cyborg named Genos, they find out that there’s a Hero Association that ranks heroes, compensates their work, and treats them as celebrities

Right, I forgot to say that superpowers and all sorts of mutations and enhancements are normal in this world. Yep, everything here is possible, except maybe Saitama finishing the opponent with more than one punch.

*wheeze* Just kidding. This, this isn’t that at all.

But we do have a high school specifically made to produce heroes though, all the same, right? Right?!

Anyway, 80% of the population of this world has “quirks” or specialized genetic abilities. Basically making this world the opposite of X-men since yep, the mutants are the majority this time.

Most children here dream of becoming a hero; not just a superpowered vigilante who saves lives. In this Japanese comic, they want to be a professional hero. A trained and licensed one.

Enter the MC, Izuku Midoriya, who was born without a quirk and has been ridiculed, pitied, or bullied because of it since he was four. He always wanted to be a hero like All Might and enroll in a prestigious school for would-be heroes.

Through a chance meeting with his favorite hero, he’s given an opportunity for his dream and applies for UA High, the top hero training high school in the country.

This manga starts on a tragic note as Tanjiro Kamado goes home one cold winter with his entire family, minus his sister Nezuko, brutally slaughtered. If that wasn’t punishment enough, she turns into a flesh-eating demon.

As you can imagine, having your sister turn into a demon in a series called Demon Slayer is at the top of the worst things to happen aside from it being the most traumatic.

So, as any good traumatized brother would do, Tanjiro stops his sister from attacking people and then brings her in his quest to get her back to normal and avenge their family the way he knows how; by being a Demon Slayer himself.

How does that work, you ask? Read the thing! You’ll see.

Goblin Slayer spends all of his waking life killing, setting traps for, and training to kill goblins. His dedication to only taking this one kind of mission has earned him both the respect and the bewilderment of his guildmates.

At one of his missions, he saves Priestess—because yes, none of the characters here have actual names— whose new party was almost swept by the unsuspectingly strategic goblins.

Initially only doing solo missions, Goblin Slayer accepts the insistent Priestess in his succeeding goblin missions and some others, as he opens up more to the people around him.

Since I’m mature enough to not crack any KFC joke, I’ll just proceed to tell you about how Curses are supernatural monsters that are bad for the world while sorcerers are the ones who exterminate them.

The protagonist here is Yuji Itadori who gets entangled with an Occult Club “activity” that frees a powerful Curse known as Ryomen Sukuna, now contained inside Yuji since this boy consumed his rotting finger.

Due to Sukuna’s nature, the sorcerers have no other choice but to exorcise the Curse along with the poor Yuji.

That’s then when Satoru Gojo, Jujutsu High School teacher, saves him some time to live as he proposes that they feed Yuji all the fingers first before they kill him instead, since his body is only good for one free-kill premium use.

Yuji agrees with this, thinking that dying to completely eradicate a malicious demon is better than just dying right now. And so, he enrolls in Tokyo Jujutsu High and faces all the challenges ahead knowing the limits of how much longer he can live.

The yakuza being the yakuza, contracted a devil to kill Denji who then instead merged with Pochita because to hell with them! And becomes a Chainsaw Devil Hybrid himself—I promise it’s as weird out-of-context as it is in context.

The MC finally gains the ability to transform parts of his body into chainsaws and uses it to insta-kill his enemies. As he makes new devil hunter friends, he gets a new job and a new life where he tries to live the one that he always wanted.

In our number one is none other than the literal found family series of a spy, an assassin, and an adorable little psychic.

Most brilliant Westalis-planted-spy known as Twilight is a hardworking individual preventing a war. Per the requirements of his latest mission, he needs to create a play family that will help him infiltrate a prestigious school.

Now operating as psychologist Loid Forger, he meets and adopts a seemingly-smart six-year-old named Anya who’s actually psychic; and then office worker Yor Briar, a government assassin known as Thorn Princess.

In a household where only Anya knows everybody’s secret, the Forgers wear the guise of a normal family as they carry out their own agendas under the table, unaware that their unit may be closer to becoming real than they realize.

There are a lot of action manga out there, especially new ones that shaped and inspired a lot of people! There’s just so much that I couldn’t stop reading!

Unfortunately, or fortunately for you maybe, all list recommendations should stop at some number lest you’d want some talkative nerd to talk forever; I’m not saying it’s me, of course, I definitely don’t talk that much.

Buuuuut on the slight chance you’ve enjoyed me chatter, stay tuned for more recommendation lists from here because there are a lot more where these came from! From best superpower animerevenge manga, and even martial arts manga!
