When it comes to Main Characters in anime, there is never a shortage of characters who are Overpowered, but in some cases, the Main Character hides their power until forced to reveal it or their character appearances would never make the viewer suspect that they are going to have the powers that they actually do.
This list will be about anime where Main Characters Are Overpowered But Hide It!
Anime Where the Main Character is Overpowered But Hides It (RECOMMENDATIONS)
48. Ben To (Sato Yo)

Total19/50 |
Shopping for bargains is a risky thing, as Sato Yo found out when he tried to buy a bargain Bento box. Instead of a half-priced treat, he got beaten up. It turns out that shopping for half priced bento is taken very seriously by the Half-Priced Food Lovers Club and once the food is reduced, it is an all-out brawl!
Asked to join the club by Sen Yarizui, Sato is introduced to a whole new world where fighters train to brawl over bargains. Split into Wolves (experienced brawlers), Dogs (newbies) and Boars (despised fighters who break the rules), Sato must learn to fight to make sure he secures the best bargains possible!
Using everything from shopping baskets to chopsticks, Sato steadily becomes a formidable fighter with exceptional healing skills, but he is not as overpowered as many on this list.
47. Sword Art Online (Kirigaya Kazuto/Kirito)
Overpowered MC10/20 |
Plot5/10 |
Character Writing5/10 |
Art7/10 |
Total27/50 |
Kirigaya ‘Kirito’ Kazuto is well known in discussion and reviews as being ridiculously overpowered BUT this may be controversial for fans, does it count when it is a game? Granted if he dies online, he dies in real life, but he does pretty much get handed every skill he needs to survive so he finds it easier than any normal player. When it looked like he would lose – he was given administrative powers!
Kirito was good at the game and his experience as a beta tester helped with that, but he loses points for power because it all seemed like he was never meant to lose and in the real world, he is just a normal teenager.
46. Plunderer (Licht Bach)
Overpowered MC14/20 |
Plot4/10 |
Character Writing4/10 |

Total27/50 |
The idea behind this anime is that in the world of Alicia, your strength and life is determined by your Count, influenced by your actions. Counts gain or lose numbers based on how they act, but each one has different criteria. The higher the number, the better your place in the world. If your number falls to 0 – it is game over for that person.
Aces are warriors from an old war, considered to be myths by most people but not Hina, who goes in search of them. No one has seen one for 300 years but that does not put her off. This is where Licht Bach comes into things. Licht does not just have a low number; he has a minus number and by the rules, should have been sent to the abyss but here he is, alive and well.
After saving the life of Hina, it is revealed that Licht is indeed an Ace (bet you did not see that coming!!) and he has made a pact with himself to hide his powers, due to his past.
45. Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody (Ichirou Suzuki/Satou Pendragon)
Overpowered MC14/20 |
Plot5/10 |
Character Writing5/10 |
Art5/10 |
Total29/50 |
Despite having one of the best series names on the list, this one is a bit of a miss for me. It is a fairly common Isekai theme. Ichirou Suzuki is working on an RPG game when he falls asleep and wakes up in the game, the day before it is supposed to be released.
He is now a 15-year-old boy called Satou Pendragon, which is the name he used when testing the game. As I said, a fairly normal theme for Isekai. He is, however, fairly overpowered as an adventurer, able to take out a whole army of lizard warriors at the very beginning of his time in the game.
44. Chivalry of a Failed Knight (Ikki Kurogane)
Overpowered MC14/20 |
Plot6/10 |
Character Writing6/10 |
Art7/10 |
Total33/50 |
Ikki Kurogane attends Hagun Academy, a school for students known as Blazers. Blazers are able to use their souls to make powerful weapons which they use to compete against other schools in the Seven Star Sword Festival. They are ranked from A – F Class and Ikki Kurogane is a Class F Blazer.
Although he comes from a long line of powerful Blazers, Ikki is seen as ‘the worst one’ with no magical power. His roommate, Stella Vermillion, is an A-Ranked Blazer Princess. One fateful day, Ikki walks in on Stella while she is undressed, and she challenges him to a duel with whoever loses becoming the slave to the winner.

If you had to constantly wear a Bear Outfit to be overpowered, would you do it? This is the situation in which Yuna, a 15-year-old gamer, is faced with. After making a fortune buying stocks in a VRMMO, Yuna shuts herself away from the world and plays World Fantasy Online full time.
After answering a survey about the newest update, Yuna finds herself inside the game wearing her bear outfit. No longer able to log out, she set out to explore. Without her bear suit, she is a normal girl but wearing it, she is overpowered and can do whatever she wants.
42. Asterisk War (Ayato Amagiri)
Overpowered MC15/20 |
Plot5/10 |
Character Writing6/10 |
Art7/10 |
Total33/50 |
Ayato Amagiri transfers to Seidoukan Academy, a school full of students known as Genestella. In this school, it is normal to have insane over the top powers so Ayato would need to be extremely overpowered to stand out! The students duel each other in Festas (I mean it’s an anime school, students fighting each other in battles is the norm!)
But, Ayato has no interest in festas. His only goal is to find his sister who disappeared suddenly but not before sealing his powers, leaving him slightly underpowered amongst the Genestella elite.
41. Hyouka (Houtarou Oreki)
Overpowered MC14/20 |
Plot7/10 |
Character Writing7/10 |
Art6/10 |
Total34/50 |
Houtarou Oreki is slightly different to others on this list as his power is less physical and more that he is extremely good at investigations and solving mysteries.
Forced to join the Classics Club by his sister, Houtarou finds that there is a secret history to the club that needs to be solved. Although he prefers to do as little as possible, his investigation skills make him crucial in solving the 45-year-old mystery surrounding the Classics Club.
40. Blue Exorcist (Rin Okumura)
Overpowered MC13/20 |
Plot7/10 |
Character Writing7/10 |
Art7/10 |
Total34/50 |
Growing up in the human world known as Assiah, Rin Okumura lives a normal life. As a teenager, he has a slightly problematic character, but his world is about to change dramatically. There is another world called Gehenna which is home to demons and Satan himself. Unable to cross the boundaries between the two worlds, Satan sent his son to the human world to provide him a way to cross over.
Rin and his twin brother, Yukio have a human mother and Rin’s world changes dramatically when his father, Satan, comes calling wanting him to claim as his vessel so he can take over Assiah. Killing Rin’s guardian, Shiro Fujimoto, did not go down well with Rin and so enrolling at True Cross Academy, Rin learns to use the powers inherited from his father and the exorcist skills his brother is already an expert in, to take down his father Satan and save the human race.
39. The Fruit of Grisaia (Yuuji Kazami)
Overpowered MC15/20 |
Plot6/10 |
Character Writing6/10 |
Art7/10 |
Total34/50 |
After growing up working as an assassin for an international bad guy, Yuuji Kazami has skills that would be considered overpowered in a normal high school aged boy. Trying to change his life and live as an ordinary student, Yuuji transfers to Mihama Academy.
The academy only has five other students so it is not really a great start to trying to be ordinary but there you go. The girls already at the academy are known as Fallen Fruit, so they are not considered to be good and wholesome characters. They have traumas in their past that rival Yuuji’s own, and he uses the powers he has to try and save them, whilst also trying to save himself.
38. Black Clover (Asta)
Overpowered MC15/20 |
Plot7/10 |
Character Writing8/10 |
Art4/10 |
Total34/50 |
Asta is a boy born without magic in a world where magic is important and puts him at a disadvantage from the start. What he lacks in magic, he makes up for in loudness, annoying characteristics and physical strength.
However, at age 15, his life changes when he is awarded a Five Leafed Clover grimoire that allows him to use Anti Magic. Being able to cancel out magic is a useful skill in a world that relies on the use of magic. The downside is that it comes with a built-in demon making people fear and distrust Asta and his abilities.
37. Quanzhi Fashi (Mo Fan)
Overpowered MC16/20 |
Plot6/10 |
Character Writing6/10 |
Art6/10 |
Total34/50 |
As main characters go, Mo Fan is not the most pleasant. In the real world, he was shown to be troublesome. Despite being intelligent, he just did not try at all. When he finally decides to try on his exams (instead of handing in blank ones), he is transported to a world similar to his but where instead of science, the students are taught to use magic.
In both worlds, Mo Fan is poor and looked down on because of it. He also has no education in magic like everyone else has, so he must learn fast now that he is in a school known for magic education! The rich kids look down on him as a poor kid with no magic skill, but they are so, so wrong about that!
36. Assassination Classroom (Nagisa Shiota)

Art7/10 |
Total35/50 |
We are back on “I am biased because I love this anime” ground here. This is a go to when I want something funny, easy to watch and just an all-round enjoyable story.
However, the main character, Nagisa Shiota, is not massively overpowered compared to others. He is, after all, a normal school kid who was given the task of killing his massively overpowered teacher/octopus monster alongside the rest of his class of outcasts. Simple right and who doesn’t love a good outcast?
35. Didn’t I Say To Make My Ability Average In My Next Life? (Misato Kurihara)
Overpowered MC15/20 |
Plot7/10 |
Character Writing7/10 |
Art6/10 |
Total35/50 |
When Misato Kurihara, an 18-year-old girl, is killed saving a young girl from being run over she asks to be reincarnated as average in her next life. She hated being seen as outstanding in her past life. Unfortunately for Misato, the world into which she is reincarnated has a very different level when it comes to ‘average’!
Reincarnated as Adele von Ascham, she has a high level of physical and magic ability which is not what she wanted! However, she asked for average skills and that is what she got! In her new life, that means having power that is 6,800 times stronger than a typical human.
34. Classroom of the Elite (Kiyotaka Ayanokouji)
Overpowered MC16/20 |
Plot7/10 |
Character Writing7/10 |
Art5/10 |
Total35/50 |
Kiyotaka Ayanokouji is an interesting main character whose personality could be subject to longer blogs than this! But he is on this list as his intelligence and cunning makes him overpowered when looked at against the other characters. Koudo Ikusei Senior High School is sold to parents as the perfect school. Students are given freedom that is not available in other schools, and it ranks high across Japan.
Students are ranked by their entrance exams; the higher classes being given better treatment than the lower ones. They compete for points that can be used as currency within the school to gain advantages. Kiyotaka hides just how intelligent he is (flunking the exam on purpose) and is put in the lowest class, D, where he makes friends with Suzune Horikita and Kikyou Kushida.
33. Elfen Lied (Lucy)
Overpowered MC16/20 |
Plot6/10 |
Character Writing7/10 |
Art6/10 |
Total35/50 |
Lucy is a mutant who evolved from humans known as Diclonius and who are able to infect male humans causing their children to be born as Diclonius. Lucy, as well as the other mutants, have extreme powers, including the ability to use invisible arms to fight her enemies, leaving no survivors. After escaping from their captors, Lucy is freed into the world to seek revenge.
This is a very adult themed anime with many themes that could trigger upset and be unsuitable for vulnerable or young viewers.
32. Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan (Rikuo Nura)

Plot7/10 |
Character Writing

Total36/50 |
Rikuo Nura is not a normal boy, he is ¾ human and ¼ yokai (supernatural entity for those of you whose Japanese folklore is rusty!). By day, he is a normal schoolboy but by night he is an extremely powerful yokai, who looks older than he is during the day. Living amongst the Nura Clan, he is used to living with other yokai and that is his normal life.
To outsiders, yokai are dangerous and are to be feared. Rokuo has no memory of what happens when he is the night-time version of himself, but he craves life as a normal 12-year-old boy! Normality is not going to happen, and so he has to learn to live with both sides of his life.

This anime is set in another world, with traces of Ancient Britain, complete with warriors, monsters and magic. Holy Knights are there to protect the weak using their powerful magic. Amongst them, the strongest of the strong were led by Meliodas. Betrayed by the Holy Knights and portrayed as villains, they split up and hid.
They were known as The Seven Deadly Sins and the story follows Meliodas and Elizabeth, as they travel to find the other members of the Deadly Sins and clear their name, all whilst saving the world from the real threat – demons determined to bring the world to its knees.

Total36/50 |
Shigeo ‘Mob’ Kageyama does not stand out in his day-to-day life and that is how he earned his nickname ‘Mob’. Despite looking like a normal, average boy on the outside, Mob is actually an overpowered psychic who uses his emotions to control his abilities. He has no interest in using his powers except to impress the girl he likes, Tsubomi.
Mob lends his powers to assist Arataka Reigen, in running his con to get money out of people. Arataka is a fake and it is Mob’s ability that allows him to make money. Mob spends his days helping to rid the world of evil spirits whilst only using a tiny percentage of his actual power.

Ikta Solork is the main character and from reviews, it appears he is overpowered from start to finish alongside most of the characters. They join the military, are in a shipwreck and end up in enemy territory trying to rescue Princess Chamille Kitora Katjvanmaninik (try saying that one three times fast!!)
They rescue her and become Imperial Knights meaning that all hopes Ikta had of a quiet life are out the window.

Seiya Ryuugugin is a classic example of overpowered but hiding it. He is chosen by the goddess, Ristarte, to be her hero against the Demon Lord, Gaeabrande, as Seiya is the strongest person she can find. However, he is also so cautious that he refuses to use his powers until he has trained – and trained – and trained.
Driving Ristarte crazy, he will not even consider facing Gaeabrande until he has trained, even though he is already 10 levels above everyone else. He shows up late, wants to work on his social skills and magic he could not use, before he will even consider fighting.
Seiya is the poster boy for overpowered but hiding it!

Lloyd Belladonna does not think he is overpowered. In fact, he thinks he is extremely weak. He was the weakest in his village and that does tend to make a person have some doubt. He moves to the Kingdom of Azami to become a soldier, but he is carrying with him the belief that he is a weakling.
The reality is that Lloyd is actually overpowered compared to people in Azami because the people in his village were also incredibly overpowered. Lloyd is, however, a bit dense and is not big on common sense.
26. A Certain Magical Index (Touma Kamijou)
Overpowered MC16/20 |
Plot7/10 |

Touma Kamijou lives in a world where there is conflict between science and magic. After rescuing a young girl named Index Librorum Prohibitorum, and losing his memory, he is drawn into the conflict between the two sides.
Touma has the power, Image Breaker, in his right arm, which is useful when fighting magicians as it allows him to nullify all magic and divine abilities. It has a slightly annoying side effect of also giving Touma the worst possible luck. As Index says, luck is a blessing from God and therefore a divine thing.

He tries to live the life of a normal schoolboy, until he meets Mirai Kuriyama who is about to throw herself off the school roof.
Mirai is a Spirit World Warrior whose role is fight youmu and so she attacks Akihito and is understandably surprised when he does not succumb to his wounds. She then spends the next week trying to finish what she started but Akihito recovers every time.
To stop her using him as target practice, Akihito offers to help her with her lack of confidence as a Spirit World Warrior and falls in love in the process.

Gon is the son of a famous Hunter, who disappeared when Gon was a child. Determined to follow in his father’s footsteps, Gon leaves him to take the infamous Hunter exam. The exam has a pass rate of less than 1/100,000 so by passing the test in the first place, Gon is shown to have the makings of a powerful Hunter. Added to that, at the beginning, Gon is 12 years old.
Hunters are charged with seeking out new species of animals, finding rare treasure and hunting down the occasional lawbreaker. They could be seen as a cross between Big Game Hunters and Bounty Hunters.
So why is Gon on this list? Let’s look at the evidence supporting his overpowered abilities. He has above average strength, stamina and senses. He can hold his breath for an abnormal amount of time. He has little fear or regard for himself. These things alone make him more powerful than an average 12-year-old, however, he can also understand when birds are scared that a storm is coming (random!) and can conceal his aura and heal 30% faster than others.

First things first, I admit to being biased when it comes to Glenn Radars, as he is one of my favourite characters. On the outside, he is no one’s idea of an overpowered character. Hired as a teacher at Seidoukan Academy (an elite magic school), he is scruffy, has no interest in teaching and does not show any magic ability at all. He also has an ability to drive Sistine Fibel (a powerful student) and her friend, Rumia Tingel, insane!
But all is not as it seems. Glenn hides his powers and his identity from his students. He was formerly a powerful magician who served in the Alzano Imperial Court Magicians under the name “The Fool”. After retiring, to protect both himself and his friends, Glenn hides his power and lives the life of an apparently useless teacher.

A chance encounter with All Might changes Midoriya’s life. One for All, which is the quirk responsible for All Might’s power is not a quirk that a person is born with. It is transferred from one user to another. After his last battle, All Might is not the hero he used to be, suffering life-changing injuries. Seemingly on a whim, All Might transfer One for All to Midoriya (by making him eat his hair!), allowing him a chance to enrol at UA Hero Academy and chase his dream of becoming a hero.

This anime follows the Isekai formula – students are at school, something awful happens, students die, and the students are reincarnated in another world. Most of the students are reincarnated as humans, but not Shiraori. Shiraori is reincarnated as a Spider with no name. To be fair, she takes it well and it is probably the cutest spider you will ever see!
At the beginning, she is the weakest creature out there but as time passes, she gains skills and experience to eventually become extremely overpowered and be known as The Nightmare of the Labyrinth.

At First High School, students are divided into two groups, depending on their magical power. Blooms are students with high magical powers, whilst Weeds are students who have mediocre magical power. Brother and sister Tatsuya and Miyuki Shiba are students at First High School. Miyuki is a Bloom and Tatsuya is a Weed.
All is, however, not as it seems. Tatsuya is unique and his power is not normal and extremely overpowered. Maya Yotsuba, his aunt, was responsible for Tatsuya gaining magic skills that allowed him to “decompose, reconstruct and detonate matter”.
Protected by his aunt and mother, Miya Yotsuba, his powers were sealed by the creation of his sister, Miyuki and the manipulation of his emotions to rule out anything but his brotherly love for his sister.

Yu Otosaka is a transfer student at Hoshinoumi Academy. He is not the most pleasant character, with this tendency to be arrogant, cruel and self-centred. Added to that, he has the ability to possess other students for 5 seconds at a time. If that is not enough to make him overpowered, it turns out he can also take abilities from anyone who he possesses, which comes in handy when you want to get good test scores!
Charlotte is a dark story of someone who abuses their powers to the point that they lost who they actually are. Becoming known as the One-Eyed Grim Reaper (he loses an eye in a fight), Otosaka uses his powers with no restraint, stealing abilities from anyone he wants.

In her new life, Azusa is an immortal witch who, for 300 years, does live fairly peacefully helping the local village deal with their slime infestation and looking after her farm. For 300 years, she plods on killing 25 slimes a day because everyone knows slimes have low experience points in all games! But over time, those experience points add up and Azusa reaches level 99, a fact that she really wants to hide.

Sakamoto is practically perfect in every way, like an anime Mary Poppins! All the students like him out do’s all the teachers (except one!). No matter what life throws at this boy (often pranks by jealous male students), he comes out on top, and looks even more perfect than ever!
Sakamoto does not need a big write up, he has no powers to discuss to show but why is he so powerful? HE JUST IS!

Yuji Itadori is best described as a loveable idiot! He has great sporting ability but instead chooses to join the Occult Research Group as it allows him time to spend with his grandfather who is sick in hospital. On the night his grandfather dies, Itadori’s life changes in a way he could never have imagined.
After discovering and unwrapping a rotting finger they found in the school (bad idea!), a curse is set loose in the school and Itadori arrives to find Megumi Fushiguro trying to exorcise the curse using his Shinigami cursed technique. To protect Megumi, Itadori eats the finger – telling you he was an idiot! Now possessed by the powerful curse, Ryomen Sukuna by all rights Itadori should be executed but proves he is able to still control his body.
Saturo Gojo, a teacher at Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High School (and possessor of the most beautiful eyes in anime!!!), sees the potential to use Itadori as a vessel to eat all the fingers left by Sukuna and then execute him, finally killing Sukuna for good.

Summoned from his own world, Naofumi Iwatani joins the Kingdom of Melromarc as one of the Four Legendary Heroes. He is made the Shield Hero, which is considered the lowest of the four heroes who were given more impressive roles of Sword, Spear (he is sooooo dumb!) and Bow.
Set up by the King and his daughter, Malty S (Oh how I hate her!! ) Melromarc, Naofumi is banished and forced to survive and train on his own, despised by the other heroes and the population of the Kingdom.
Understandably annoyed and made at the world, Naofumi buys a demi-human, Rapthalia from a slave trader which does not help people’s opinion of him! Neither does the addition of Filo (a bird Filolial who can also have the form of a young girl) who pulls their transport.
However, their relationship is more that of family and with training and their support, Naofumi learns to unlock its’ skills and power to use his shield to become the strong hero he is supposed to be.

Well, this is a list of some of the powers he has – psychic powers, x-ray vision, levitation, ability to time leap, teleportation skills, ability to transform into whatever he wants (takes 2 hours), a female persona and many, many more!

The Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is an Isekai anime based around our main character, Satoru Mikami, who after being killed by a street robber, is reincarnated as a slime monster. Considered the lowest form of monsters, he uses his new skill “Predator” to eat every other monster he comes across in the cave he finds himself in, allowing him to use their powers as his own.
After finding a dragon, making friends with the dragon and giving each other names; he eats it to gain the dragon named Veldora’s power. Now named Rimuru, he heads out into the world to form a new Kingdom named Tempest where monsters and humans can live together in harmony.
Conclusion
Whether a main character is overpowered is not defined purely by their physical strength and intelligence should not be underrated. Considering if a character is overpowered, it is important to look at their powers compared to others within their own world as in other worlds, they may only rank as average! All the above characters are overpowered in their own worlds and every one of them has their own reasons for hiding their powers.
