The season 2 of the anime is OUT. And with it, one of the best mind-blowing anime openings even dropped. Demon Slayer is undeniably one of the big three anime of the new generation right next to Jujutsu Kaisen and Tokyo Revengers.
The series has been gaining in popularity every day and it’s not about to stop. With its unique artwork, awesome battle scenes, and elaborated plot, Demon Slayer is giving one of the best anime experiences for the pleasure of its fans.
With the drop of the Demon Slayer film, fans have been holding their hearts close because of certain character deaths. I mean, we’ve already read the manga and finished it by now… but the anime just draws out our emotions. For those who are only following the anime, guard your hearts and do your best to be brave like the hashiras!
All of us are at least aware of the series’ existence and most of us already watched the anime. So who’s your favorite character until now?Â
Demon Slayer Corps
Kagaya Ubuyashiki
He is the 97th head of the Demon Slayer Corps and the Ubuyashiki Family that he inherited at the age of 4 (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 47 Page 19). Called Oyakata-sama by all the people around him, he is a very mysterious character (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 45 Page 21 and Chapter 46 Page 5).
He considers all the Demon Slayers under him his children and his voice brings peace into the hearts of anyone who hears it. Tanjiro experienced the power of his voice himself. When he met him, he felt as if he was floating (Demon Slayer Anime: Episode 23).
That turned out to be his ability: Soothing Voice. He suddenly becomes the center of all devotion, (probably like how the ‘imprinting’ thing works in Twilight lol). He died sacrificing his life to put an end to Muzan.

Amane UbuyashikiÂ
She married Kagaya Ubuyashiki after being ordered by a high priest to become his caretaker (Demon Slayer Manga: Vol. 16, Extra Pages).
She is as devoted as her husband to the Demon Slayer Corps and handled all the important matters of the organization when Kagaya’s health worsened. Although it was an arranged marriage, she grew to love her husband from the bottom of her heart.
She never left his side even in the darkest of times. Through sickness and health, she was a loving wife and an exceptional mother to her children.’
Hinaki UbuyashikiÂ
I’ll be honest, it’s practically impossible to differentiate one sister from the other. Nothing weird here since Hinaki and Nichika Ubuyashiki are twins and the two eldest daughters of Amane and Kagaya.
Hinaki loved and respected her father more than anything in the world. Her dedication to him ran so deep that she even died alongside him when his time came. She was only nine at the time.
Nichika Ubuyashiki
The same story goes for Nichika. Twins do everything together even dying.
Though they may not have the heaviest role compared to their brother, Nichika and her sister are just as important for the support that they provide. The Ubuyashiki family is something else.

Kiriya Ubuyashiki
I’m going to announce something that might shock you, but Kiriya isn’t a girl. He is Kagaya’s only son and the next head of the family after the death of his father. Also, following in his father’s footsteps, he became the 98th Head of the Demon Slayer Corps.
The truth is Kiriya wasn’t really up to the task. Raised as a girl  (it may sound weird…) by his parents due to his weak and fragile body, he only inherited his father’s position due to his sex. However, his intelligence and amazing leadership skills made up for his lack of strength and he gained the appropriate respect any commander should get from his troops (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 144 Page 6).
Kuina Ubuyashiki
Kuina is one of the youngest of the family. She is completely devoted to her brother and started serving him as soon as he became the Head of the Demon Slayer Corps. Her brother, being under a lot of pressure emotionally, broke down more than once.
She was the one to bring him back to his senses and support him every time that happened. Her ultimate method is a nice powerful slap (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 181 Pages 1-4).

Kanata Ubuyashiki
She is the youngest member of the family. Like Kuina, her twin sister, she is serving her brother who inherited their father’s position. She first appeared during the Final Selection. Calm and composed, she seems to be emotionally numb.
She didn’t manifest any kind of feeling announcing the death of the candidates and didn’t react when attacked by Genya Shinazugawa. Like all her siblings, her smile never fades no matter the situation (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 8 Pages 13-16). Guess it’s important for her to be like her father, a beacon of light through the darkness.Â
Hashiras
The Hashiras or Pillars are a group of talented individuals in the Demon Slayer Corps. They are the most elite and very powerful members. They earned their titles for their ability to hone their each breathing style and further their capabilities. They each hold a pivotal role in the war against Muzan and his demons. There have been multiple Hashiras through the years, but the recent ones we know are quite different…
Water Hashira, Giyu Tomioka
He is one of the most important supporting characters of the series. I would even say that the story itself wouldn’t have happened without his presence. He was dispatched to save Tanjiro’s family when they were massacred by Muzan.Â
He, unfortunately, arrived too late. He found Tanjiro and Nezuko and tried to dispose of the newly turned Demon. However, after witnessing Nezuko protecting her unconscious brother without thinking of drinking blood, he decided to spare her (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 43 Page 15).
He sent Tanjiro to Sakonji Urokodaki, a former water Hashira, to train to become a Demon Slayer. He even vouchered on behalf of Nezuko and promised to commit Seppuku if she ever lays her hand on a human (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 46 Pages 10-11).
Giyu never shows any kind of emotions although he is the kindest of all the Hashiras. He is disliked by many due to his unsociable behavior but despite all of that, he would sacrifice his life in order to save the people he considers friends (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 44 Page 17).
Â
Love Hashira, Mitsuri Kanroji
Mitsuri was born with an abnormal amount of strength. For her body to keep up with her power, she had to eat four times more than the average person. Labeled as a freak by society, she never found a place where she could fit until she met Oyakata-sama (Demon slayer Manga: Vol. 6, Extra Pages).
He told her that her power was undoubtedly a beautiful gift. After hearing those words, she became a Demon Slayer and fought her way to the position of Hashira (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 124 Page 2). Her purpose is to find a man stronger than she is so she can get married.
Serpent Hashira, Obanai Iguro
Obanai’s childhood was one of the most tragic. He was born in a family of thieves that worshiped a Serpent Demon. For 370 years, they never gave birth to a male child. Obanai was the first. He was immediately imprisoned in a cage right after he caught the eye of the Serpent Demon due to his sex and his heterochromia.
She came to him every night, gazing at him and terrifying the hell out of him. At the age of 12, he left his cage for the first time. What he didn’t know is that he was being offered as a sacrifice to the Demon. After seeing how skinny he was, she decided to wait a bit more before taking the first bite.
However, she wanted to mark him as hers. She cut up his mouth, widened it till his ears. She gathered the blood that he lost in a challis and drank it like it was some fine sake (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 188 Pages 12-15).
That is why he always covers his mouth, even now. Back in his cell, he attempted an escape. Pursued by the Demon, he survived thanks to the Flame Hashira of the time who he met by accident. After disposing of the Demon, Obanai joined the Demon Slayers Corps (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 188 Pages 15-18).
Wind Hashira, Sanemi Shinazugawa
The current Wind Hashira and the older brother of Genya Shinazugawa. However, the two brothers never got along and he always told others that he had no siblings.
He first appeared during the semi-annual meeting of the Hashiras. Tanjiro was on trial for protecting Nezuko, a demon (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 45). Unable to accept the fact that a Demon can be good, he stabbed Nezuko which bought him a nice head-butt from Tanjiro.
After the Oyakata-sama defended the Demon as well, he decided to put her to the test. He stabbed her two more times then scratched his hand to see her reaction. To his unhidable surprise, Nezuko turned her head in disgust forcing all the Hashira’s to accept the fact that that Demon preserved her senses (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 46).Â
He fights Demons in a very reckless way. He uses the special aroma of his blood to make them lose all logic and strikes. When he was a child, he even fought them without a Nichirin Sword. He would incapacitate them and wait for them to burn in the sun.
He was the one who killed his mother when she was demonized using that method. Genya, who didn’t know that their mother turned into a demon, blamed his brother for her death and this is how they went in different ways (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 115 Page 1-13).
It was when he met Masachika Kumeno, a proper Demon Slayer, that he finally began training. They teamed up and together they defeated the Lower-Rank 1 but Kumeno lost his life during the battle while Sanemi was promoted to Hashira.
Stone Hashira, Gyomei Himejima
Gyomei was falsely accused of killing the seven children he was in charge of. Imprisoned, he was about to be executed when Kagaya Ubuyashiki intervened on his behalf. Knowing it was the actions of a Demon, he saved Gyomei’s life.
To put his immense strength to use and to thank Oyakata-sama for his help, he became a Demon Slayer. In only two months, he was promoted to Hashira (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 135 Page 16). He now took in his first disciple, Genya Shinazugawa.
Sound Hashira, Tengen UzuiÂ
Tengen was born in a family of Kunoichi which means ninja. Their clan was declining so his father forced him and his nine brothers to undergo severe training. A training that killed three of them.
The remaining six were forced to kill each other in a battle to see who will become the next head (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 87 Page 9). Made to dispose of two of his brothers, Tengen couldn’t handle the guilt and left the clan with his three wives.
He taught them to value themselves and helped them think like humans and not ninjas. He then sets off to search for Kagaya Ubuyashiki, the head of the Demon Slayers Corps to put his abilities to use. He rapidly climbed up the ranks and became a Hashira soon after (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 80 Pages 1-2).
Mist Hashira, Muichiro Tokito
He and his twin brother, Yuichiro Tokito, are direct descendants of the current Upper-Rank One, Kokushibo. Their parents died when they were very young. They depended on each other and survived alone in a cabin in the woods.
Muichiro had an energetic and lively personality while his brother was dead cold. One day, Amane Ubuyashiki came to recruit them as Demon Slayers. While Muichiro welcomed the idea with excitement, Yuichiro brushed her off and expelled her from their home (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 118).
A few days later, a demon attacked them. In an attempt to protect his brother, Yuichiro rushed at the Demon and lost his arm. In a fit of rage, Muichiro started attacking the demon with everything that he could put his hands on. He managed to hold on until the sun came up and the demon burned and turned to ash.
He ran to his brother’s side, held his hand in despair until he drew his last breath. Right after, Amane arrived to heal a severely wounded Muichiro. Due to the shock of the events, Muichiro lost all the memories related to his past life and dedicated his future to the Demon Slayers Corps.
His personality also changed, he became as cold like his brother was but his anger towards Demon never faded. Like Gyomei, it didn’t take him more than two months to be promoted to Hashira (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 119).
Insect Hashira, Shinobu Kocho
She is the younger sister of the former Flower Hashira, Kanae Kocho. Together they adopted and raised Kanao Tsuyuri as a member of their family. When they were young, the siblings lost their parents to a Demon.
They were slaughtered right in front of their eyes; the girls, however, were saved by Gyomei. They both joined the Demon Slayers Corps to ensure no one would have to go through that same horrific experience (Demon Slayer: One-Winged Butterfly, Chapter 1). But her sister was way too kind.
She thought there was hope for the Demons and always tried to befriend them. Due to that, she lost her life as well. Shinobu never got over her passing. She is always in a constant state of anger. She even enjoys torturing Demons before ending them. That was something that Tanjiro could smell.
When he asked her about it, she opened her heart to him and told him her story. She hoped that he would continue what her sister started and try to find other Demons like Nezuko (Demon Slayer Anime: Episode 25).
Former Hashiras
These are the former pillars that either died in combat or withdrew from their services for their own reasons.
Flower Hashira, Kanae Kocho
Kanae had the misfortune to run into the Upper Rank 2, Doma. Suffering from unhealable wounds, she was slowly fading away. Right before her end, Shinobu arrived on the scene.
She begged her to leave this dangerous life and live peacefully as they did when they were young. Shinobu hell-bent on avenging her immediately rejected the thought.
Seeing how determined she was, she understood that she wouldn’t change her mind so, with the last of her strength, she described the demon who will become Shinobu’s fixation (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 168).
Water Hashira, Sakonji Urokodaki
Urokodaki was Giyu Tomioka, Sabito and Makomo’s trainer and later became Tanjiro’s (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 4 Page 4). He was the one who captured the Hand Demon and is the cultivator of the water breathing technique.
Along with Giyu, he vouchered for Nezuko and promised to commit Seppuku if she ever hurts a human.
Thunder Hashira, Jigoro Kuwajima
Jigoro was Zenitsu and Kaigaku’s Master. When Kaigaku betrayed the Demon Slayers Corps to become the Upper Rank 6, the guilt and humiliation he felt were unbearable.
He committed Seppuku to atone for his crimes. He did it while alone, with no one to decapitate him, he suffered a slow and agonizing death (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 144 Page 9-12).
Flame Hashira, Kyojuro Rengoku
Kyojuro was the son of the former Flame Hashira (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 45 Page 3). He was the one who trained Kyojuro until he fell into despair and became an alcoholic. Kyojuro was honest, kind and brave. His sense of justice was unmatchable.
Everything he felt he expressed with power. During the Mugen training arc, the three protagonists were astonished by his strength and got attached to him even though they only spent a few hours together. He fought the Upper Rank 3, alone, to protect his subordinates and everyone on the train.
His death was magnificent and one of the saddest events of the series. Even Inosuke bawled his eyes out like a baby when he passed (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 66 Pages 8-10).
Flame Hashira, Shinjuro Rengoku
He was Kyojuro and Senjuro’s father (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 81 Page 3). He was the one who saved Obanai from the Serpent Demon (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 188 Pages 16-18) as well as Fuku’s mother and her grandma from a demon attack.
When his wife passed, he lost his reason for living and started drinking. Believing that all he did was pointless, he decided to shred the record of the Flame Hashira’s generations.
He was also the one who told Tanjiro that he was able to use the Sun Breathing Technique, the first and most powerful one but refused to give him any more information on the matter (Demon Slater Yuukaku-hen Anime: Episode 1).
Demon Slayers
The Demon Slayer Corps is the organization that the Ubuyashiki family governs. They are a group of swordsmen that dedicate themselves to protecting humans from demons. Though there are hundreds of them in the country, the government does not recognize them, often leading the Demon Slayer Corps to deal with the demons themselves. Their sole purpose is to eradicate demons from the face of the earth.
Tsuguko, Kanao Tsuyuri
Kanao was the youngest daughter of a very poor family. With barely anything to eat and abused by her parents, she was sold to become a slave. With no emotion or any kind of warmth in her soul, she was barely subsisting. She was more dead than alive.
She was saved by Shinobu and her sister who adopted her. Unable to take any sort of decision on her own, she started flipping a coin that will decide her fate (Demon Slayer Extra: Bonus Manga). The first time she was moved and her eyes glowed with life was when Tanjiro told her to start following her heart.
When the Sound Hashira was forcibly taking Aoi on a suicidal mission, for the very first time, after remembering Tanjiro’s words, she moved on her own accord and tried to stop him (Demon Slater Yuukaku-hen Anime: Episode 1).

Tanjiro Kamado
Tanjiro is the series MC. His entire family was killed by Muzan and his sister Nezuko was turned into a Demon. Filled with despair, he got back up and swore to turn his sister back and kill the murderer who massacred his loved ones.
With a heightened sense of smell, he picked up and memorized the Demon’s scent (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 1 Page 23-27). Thanks to that, Tanjiro was the first Demon Slayer ever to encounter the one and only Muzan. His father also turned out to be one of the strongest breathing technique users (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 151 Pages 4-6).
The only one who still knew how to use the Sun Breathing Technique that he passed down to his son as the Hinokami Kagura dance. Many miracles happened when Tanjiro entered the Demon Slayer’s world. While everyone thought that demons were mindless creatures, he discovered that that statement was wrong.
It wasn’t just his sister who kept her senses, he met other demons who were on the side of the humans and were fighting against their own kind for the greater good like Tamayo. He is one of the rare Demon Slayers whose blade turned black which is an extremely bad omen.
Despite the pain and the challenges, Tanjiro stayed true to himself, kind to humans as well as demons, he moved the hearts of many during his journey. From Kanao to Shinobu and even Giyu, who was on the brink of despair when his companions died and he alone survived. The one who picked him up was Tanjiro himself.
Zenitsu Agatsuma
Zenitsu’s biggest fear is to die alone. When a girl presented herself and agreed to marry him, he didn’t hesitate a second. She ended up stealing all his money and escaping with her actual boyfriend. Now drowning in debts, Zenitsu’s life could have been considered over (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 33 Page 6).
Jigoro was the one who saved him. He paid the entire amount and took him under his wing to train him as a Demon Slayer. Zenitsu is a coward with no confidence. Afraid of everything, especially Demons. He only shows courage when he is sleeping or when Nezuko might be in danger.
However, he greatly matured. Now able to overcome his fears, he can finally fight while awake. He was the one who took down the Upper Rank 6 and the one who will become Nezuko’s future husband.

Inosuke’s mother was married to an abusive husband. Disgusted by her life, she took her son and fled. She joined the Paradise Faith cult led by Doma.
Once she discovered that Doma was eating his worshipers, she attempted an escape. When all routes started closing before her, she threw her son in the river to give him a fighting chance. He was only a newborn at the time.
She was eaten by the Demon and Inosuke was rescued and raised by boars (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 160 Page 17). Inosuke has a very wild and boorish personality but he is an extremely valuable asset.
His natural instincts are as sharp as Tanjiro’s nose and he tends to think outside the box due to the environment he grew up in.
Genya Shinazugawa
Genya’s mother turned into a demon and was killed by his brother, Sanemi. Without knowing all the facts, he blamed Sanemi for her death and the brothers went separate ways.
Years later, Genya put the piece back together and realized his mistake. His next step was to become a Demon Slayer to reconcile with his brother. Unable to use breathing techniques, it was Gyomei who found out that he had another way of fighting Demons.
If he eats them, Genya can acquire the abilities of the Demon in question. Trained by the Stone Hashira, he soon became a legitimate member of the Corps and met his brother. He apologized but was immediately rejected. Now, he is aiming for the position of Hashira to get closer to him.

Yoriichi Tsugikuni
Yoriichi is the first Demon Slayer that came into existence. He was the one who created the Sun Breathing Technique. He tried to teach his technique to others but nobody could master it so he created copies of the technique that are easier on the body.
That’s how the current breathing styles were born. On his forehead, he possesses the same Demon Slayer mark as Tanjiro. A mark that greatly enhances their innate abilities.
His brother, Michikatsu, attempted to learn the Sun breathing technique and failed as well. Envious and jealous of his brother, he created his own technique, the Moon Breathing Technique. Yoriichi was the one who first met Muzan. Upon realizing the threat that he posed they battled instantly.
He discovered that the Demon had five hearts and brains that constantly moved in his body. Unleashing his ultimate attack, he crushed them all in one slash. To save himself, Muzan blew up his own body and managed to escape.
Right after he learned that Michitaku betrayed him and turned into a Demon he wanted to atone by committing Seppuku but Oyakama-sama (Kagaya’s father) stopped him and he exiled himself instead.
He stayed with the Kamado’s, showed them his technique in the form of a graceful dance and gave them his Hanafuda earrings. After Yoriichi left them, the Kamados promised him to keep his technique alive through their descendants.
On his very last day on earth, he went to confront his brother who is now known as Upper-Rank One, Kokushibo. Even though he was very old, he managed to overpower his brother with ease. He was about to finish him when he drew his last breath, dying from old age.
Yoriichi became the Legend of the Demon Slayer Corps, the strongest warrior, the undefeated Demon Slayer (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 177 and Chapter 186 Pages 7-19).
Butterfly Mansion

Demons
Demons in Kimetsu no Yaiba are an ancient race of immortal beings that feed on humans to get stronger. They have vampire-like symptoms where their diet is tailored around flesh and blood, and the daylight is extremely deadly.
Muzan Kibutsuji
Muzan is Demon Slayer’s antagonist. The first of his kind, the King of Demons. He is the father of all the demons that came into existence (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 11 Page 2-3). His goal is to become a perfect being.
Immortal, ignorant about the concept of fear, eternal and able to walk freely in the sunlight (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 137 Page 11). In order to do so, he has been seeking the Blue Spider Lily and created more and more demons to find a way to cure their inability to walk in the sun.
All the demons were turned by receiving his blood. Due to that, he is able to control them. He can hear what they hear, see what they see, read their thoughts and even kill them instantly. The only exceptions to those rules are Nezuko Kamado, Tamayo, Yushiro, and Chachamaru (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 83 Page 1).

Nezuko Kamado
Nezuko is Tanjiro’s sister. She was attacked along with her family by Muzan. They all received his blood but only Nezuko was able to sustain the power and turned into a Demon.
When she woke up after her transformation, famished, she attacked her brother who was holding her. Giyu stopped her from committing an act that she would have regretted all her life. Giyu overpowered her with ease but she was saved by Tanjiro who still believed that she still had the heart of a human.
Giyu wounded Tanjiro. Upon seeing her brother hurt, she forgot all about her hunger to protect her brother. Shocked by her action, the Hashira spared her (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 1). Nezuko is very different from other demons, even if the smell of blood makes her salivate, she keeps on holding herself back.
Proof that she still has control over her body and desires. Because she does not consume humans, she doesn’t heal instantly. To recover, she enters a deep slumber that could last for months if her injuries are severe. Also, Muzan has no control whatsoever over her.
Tamayo
Tamayo was suffering from an incurable disease. She was on the brink of death and only wished to see her children grow. So when Muzan approached her with a way out, she took it. He didn’t inform her about the after-effects of the transformation so Tamayo ended up killing and eating her entire family.
Disgusted by herself, enraged by what Muzan did to her, she wanted revenge. Unable to even put a scratch on him, she ended up being enslaved and forced to serve the monster who destroyed her life (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 138 Pages 15-16).
She managed to escape him when Yoriichi left Muzan half dead. From this day forth, she has been fighting on the side of humanity, trying to find a way to turn demons back into humans. When Tanjiro encountered Muzan, she intervened and saved him.
She also asked him to gather the blood of high-ranking demons in order to help with her research. She stopped drinking human blood and is subsisting by consuming the blood of animals even though the pain was unimaginable (Demon Slayer Manga: Vol. 21, Extra Pages).
Yushiro
Yushiro had a terminal disease. When he was still human, his doctor was none other than Tamayo. There was no hope for him so Tamayo gave him a choice, live longer but in the body of a demon.
He took her proposal. From this day forth, he became her faithful servant and her protector. Tamayo is his everything, he wouldn’t mind dying for her. When she decided to help Tanjiro on his journey, he followed her lead and became one of his comrades.
After Muzan’s death, Yushiro will become the last of his kind. He dedicated his eternal life to realizing his dream of becoming a world-famous painter. His muse is of course Lady Tamayo.
Chachamaru
He is Tamayo’s familiar and he assists her in her medical research. He retrieves the blood samples that Tanjiro has been collecting on his journey. He was a normal cat, but before the decisive battle against Muzan, Yushiro turned him into a demon (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 194 Page 3).
Susamaru Â
Hell-bent on becoming one of the Twelve Kizuki, Susamaru was more ruthless and more determined than any other opponent that Tanjiro faced at the beginning of his journey.
Before turning into a demon, she was a handball player. The Temari that she used became her weapon of choice, weapons that she could control from a distance with the Demon Blood Art (Demon Slayer Manga and Anime: Chapter 14 and Episode 8).
Yahaba
Yahaba was Susamaru’s partner and like her, aspired to become one of the Twelve Kizuki. Much more calm and tactical with a very mysterious Demon Blood Art, it could have been game over for Tanjiro real quick if he didn’t receive the help of Lady Tamayo and Yushiro (Demon Slayer Manga and Anime: Chapter 14 and Episode 8).
Temple DemonÂ
Tanjiro happened to come across the Temple Demon when he was searching for Urokodaki. He was the first demon he ever encountered and he fought him together with Nezuko. They overpowered him and pinned him to a tree.
That’s when his future Sensei appeared. He told Tanjiro to finish him with his own hand but he couldn’t. Instead, he waited for the sun to come up. That’s when Urokodaki stated that Tanjiro was too soft to become a Demon Slayer and almost refused to train him (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 3 Pages 3-7).
Hand DemonÂ
The Hand Demon was captured by Urokodaki and has been used as one of the challenges for the Demon Slayer Final Exam. Boiling in anger and desiring revenge, he especially targeted the former Water Hashira’s students, never letting one of them survive the exam.
He was the one who killed Sabito and Makome along with more than 50 other participants just for the fun of it. Only Giyu managed to escape him. Tanjiro finally decapitated him when his time came to become an official Demon Slayer (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 6 – 7 – 8).
Tongue DemonÂ
He lived in Tsuzumi Mansion along with the Horned Demon and Kyogai.
Horned Demon
Â
He lived in Tsuzumi Mansion along with the Tongue Demon and Kyogai. The three of them always fought over who would have the delight to eat their prey. When Kiyoshi was captured they started fighting and the Horned Demon ripped one of Kyogai’s tsuzumis.
Kiyoshi grabbed it and managed to escape them using its teleportation power (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 23 Page 15).
Swamp DemonÂ
The Swamp Demon’s disposal was Tanjiro’s first official mission for the Corps. The demon had been kidnapping and killing young ladies in a certain village.
The Swamp Demon had three bodies, Nezuko was in charge of protecting the humans while Tanjiro dived into his domain and killed him (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 9 – 10).
Spider Demon, Father Â
The father in Rui’s Spider Family. He was forced by the Lower Rank Five to change his appearance to look similar to him so he could fit in with his fake family.
Spider Demon, MotherÂ
Her true form was that of a child. She was just a kid when she turned into a demon. Because she couldn’t endorse the role of a mother as she should, she was often abused by both Rui and the spider father (Demon Slayer Anime: Episode 16).
Spider Demon, SonÂ
He fought and lost against Zenitsu but managed to poison him. Zenitsu almost turned into a spider because of him (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 32 – 33 – 34).
Spider Demon, DaughterÂ
She was tortured and killed by Shinobu (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 41).
SlasherÂ
Slasher was a demon that used the train station as his hunting ground. While investigating the Mugan Train disappearances, Rengoku disposed of him (Demon Slayer Mugen Train Anime: Episode 1).
Serpent DemonÂ
It was the Demon that Obanai’s family was worshiping. She got attached to Obanai and when the time came to eat him, she refrained herself waiting for him to grow up a bit more.
However, to match with her, she split up his mouth all the way to his ears which is why he always covers it with bandages. When Obanai escaped and she went after him, the Flame Hashira of the time, Rengoku’s father, decapitated her (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 188 Page 14).
Upper Ranks
The demons in the upper ranks are entirely different from the lower-rank demons. Their power is on par with the Hashiras and could easily kill demon slayers.
Upper Rank 1, KokushiboÂ
Kokushibo was named Michikatsu Tsugikuni before becoming a demon and he was Yoriichi Tsugikuni’s older brother. Muichiro, the Mist Hashira, is one of his descendants and he is the one who turned Kaigaku into a demon (Demon Slayer: Chapter 165 Page 5).
His brother, Yoriichi, who was born with a strange mark on his forehead, was considered to be an abomination. That abomination turned out to be more talented, more intelligent and stronger than anyone on earth. Yoriichi created the Sun Breathing Technique, the most powerful breathing style, a style that he couldn’t master.
Humiliated, he developed his own technique, the Moon Breathing Technique. But even that wasn’t enough to surpass his prodigy of a brother. He was envious and became jealous of him, he hated him for being so perfect and taking everything that should have been his.
What’s even worse is that his life was saved easily by his brother more than once. All the demons he lost to, he would kill without breaking a sweat. Instead of being grateful, those acts only managed to light his anger (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 176 Pages 1-2).
Muzan came to him telling him there was a solution, a way to surpass his brother and that way was to become a demon. Immediately persuaded, he was demonized and took on the name Kokushibo (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 178 Page 3-11).
He became the Upper-Rank One and kept his title till the present day. He was the one who killed the present Oyakata-sama’s father and offered his head to Muzan (Demon Slayer Manga: Vol. 21, Extra Pages). Then came the day he would face his brother.
Yoriichi was old and blind. He was disgusted at the sight of the body of humans and even pitied his brother. But even in that devastated state, he still feared his brother as his skill and power were still intact. Even though afraid, he desired that fight but before he could unleash his sword, his brother had already slashed most of his neck.
He still couldn’t believe how inferior he was. He prepared to fight back but Yoriichi perished from old age (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 174). He was furious, it was his last chance to prove himself. Instead, he was humiliated again and would never have the chance to regain his pride.
Yoriichi is now known as the Undefeated Demon Slayer, he is a Legend that even Muzan couldn’t scratch (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 178 Page 13).

Upper Rank 2, DomaÂ
As a human, Doma was the religious head of the Paradise Faith cult. That’s a position that he still kept after his demonization (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 142 Pages 1-3). His mother killed his father for cheating on her and she then committed suicide in front of his son.
Doma was very young at the time, but instead of grief, he only felt annoyed for having to clean up after them. When he was 20, he met Muzan and was turned (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 163 Page 4).
He became the Upper-Rank Six first, found Daki and Gyutaro and demonized them. Soon after that event, he gained a lot of power, surpassing Akaza even though he became a demon after him. He was therefore promoted to Upper-Rank Two and the Sixth position went to the siblings he saved.
He was the one who ate Inosuke’s mother when she was a member of his cult (Demon Slayer Manga: Vol. 19, Extra Pages and Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 160). He also fought and won against Kanae Kocho, but before ending her, he had to flee because the sun began to rise.
Upper Rank 3, AkazaÂ
His human name was Hakuji. He used to steal in order to buy medicine for his sick father. When his father learned how he got the money, he hung himself saying that if it was through dishonest methods, he didn’t want to get better.
Devastated by his father’s loss, he started picking fights with whoever came across him. One of his targets was Keizo but was easily defeated by him. Keizo adopted him and asked him to take care of his sick daughter.
After spending some years together, Keizo made Hakuji his heir and gave him the hand of his daughter. Hakuji overjoyed, vowed to always protect them. Unfortunately, they were both poisoned and killed when Hakuji was visiting his father’s grave.Â
Enraged, he pulverized the perpetrators, he pounded them barehanded and left their bodies unrecognizable.
The incident caught Muzans eyes, he was surprised and disappointed to see that it was a human who was responsible for such a gruesome massacre. He then decided to turn him into a demon and immediately gave him a position in the Twelve Kizuki (Demon Slayer Manga: Vol. 18, Extra Pages).
He also was Muzan’s favorite, he had high hopes for him as he never failed a mission. The one time Muzan ever got mad at him was when he failed to kill Tanjiro and the trio and fled from them and even got injured by a Demon Slayer who wasn’t a Hashira.Â
He at least killed Rengoku but Muzan stated that that wasn’t an incredible feat since many of his demons can dispose of Hashira’s (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 63).
Upper Rank 4, NakimeÂ
Nakime was the demon in charge of summoning other demons in the Infinite Castle on Muzan’s orders. She got promoted to Upper-Rank Four after Hantengu’s death.
When she was human, she was an amateur biwa player. Her biwa became her weapon and the instrument that she uses for summoning. Her skills at the biwa weren’t top-notch. She had a performance coming, and before the appointed time, due to a certain turn of events, she killed her husband.
Nervous beyond imagination, the sound that came out of her biwa was surprisingly melodious and mesmerizing. Ever since, she developed a habit of murdering someone before performing.
She turned into a demon when she stupidly chose Muzan as one of her targets. Impressed with her abilities, he spared her and made her his personal servant (Demon Slayer Second Fanbook).
Former Upper Rank 4, HantenguÂ
He was one of the antagonists of the Swordsmith Village Arc along with Gyokko. After his death, he was replaced by Nakime (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 98 Page 4).
Upper Rank 5, GyokkoÂ
Gyokko’s human name was Managi. He was a badly deranged child. His parents drowned and he found their bodies almost unrecognizable. He was just fascinated by them.
He became the village freak. One day, a boy came to make fun of him, he killed him and threw his body to slowly rot in a jar. When the boy’s parents discovered what he did, they stabbed him. He was saved and demonized by Muzan (Demon Slayer Second Fanbook).
Upper Rank 6, KaigakuÂ
Kaigaku was the former Thunder Hashira’s student alongside Zenitsu. He was a Demon Slayer and had the misfortune to have to go up against the Upper Rank 1, Kokushibo. He was defeated by him in a flash. To save himself, he surrendered and begged for his life.
He was then turned into a demon, climbed up the ranks and became the Upper-Rank Six instead of Daki and Gyutaro (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 145 Page 2-3).Â
When he was a human, he was one of the children that Gyomei Himejima was taking care of. He was also the one who led the demon to the Temple where the other children were staying (Demon Slayer Manga: Vol. 17, Extra Pages).
Former Upper Rank 6, GyutaroÂ
Gyutaro has the same backstory as his sister. On the contrary to his sister, who had the appearance of a goddess, he looked more like a troll. He was extremely ugly and was abused and mocked for it. His sister was the only one to cherish and defend him.
After all, he was the one who raised and cared for her. When he turned into a demon, his strength was on another level, he killed and ate thirteen Hashira while his sister only got seven (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 74 Page 13).
Former Upper Rank 6, DakiÂ
She and her older brother, Gyutaro, were sharing the position of Upper Rank Six before being replaced by Kaigaku. Her mother was a prostitute.Â
She was mentally ill and tried to kill her son, Daki’s brother, multiple times. She also constantly abused him since she didn’t have the means to keep him fed. When Daki came to life, she was named Ume.
Her mother couldn’t stand the color of her hair nor her eyes and tried to kill her more than once as well. They tried to sever ties with their mother and Gyutaro started taking care of Ume.Â
Ume was of a rare beauty, all she needed to do was smile and gifts would come pouring from men as well as women. She became an Oiran in the Entertainment District’s High-Class Brothels.
She made a fortune and, of course, let her brother make use of it for everything he did for her. Their perfect life came to an end when she blinded a Samurai because he was insulting her brother. He tied her, burned her alive and threw her in a ditch to die a slow and agonizing death.
Her brother found her, enraged, he killed the Samurai and tried to find help in vain. Doma, who was the Upper-Rank Six at the time, stumbled upon them and turned both of them into Demons. Daki became so strong that she managed to kill seven Hashira’s all by herself (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 74 Page 13).
Lower Ranks
The demons in the lower rank are stronger than usual demons because of Muzan’s blood that courses through them. However, inexperienced demon slayers can easily be dead if they encounter them.

Lower Rank 1, EnmuÂ
When he was a human, Enmu had the hardest of times trying to make the difference between dream and reality. He became a hypnotic doctor when he grew up, convincing terminal patients that they were fully recovered. Muzan had no intention of turning him into a demon, he just wanted to eat him.
He ripped his guts out but Enmu showed no sign of pain or fear. Instead of cursing him, he praised him. With those last words, Muzan changed his mind and turned him.Â
When the other Lower Ranks were petrified in fear when Muzan started executing them, the only one who was overjoyed to have the privilege of dying at the hands of the Demon King was Enmu.
Muzan, who could hear his thoughts, spared him again (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 51 – 52). He gave him more of his blood making him even stronger. He then became the antagonist of the Mugen Train Arc and was killed by Tanjiro and Inosuke (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 32).
His Demon Blood Art reflected his time as a human and he would make his targets enter a deep sleep filled with the most beautiful of dreams. A dream that they would never want to get out of, until he turns it into the most horrible of nightmares (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 53).

Muzan then offered him the possibility to acquire a strong body in the form of a demon. He took his offer. His parents were overjoyed when they saw him freely walk for the first time. But his hunger strikes and he kills a man in their house.
The scene was witnessed by his parents who believed that their son had become a threat to everyone around him. They tried to kill him in his sleep but failed and were killed by him instead. Rui was in denial. He couldn’t accept the fact that his beloved parents would ever attempt to hurt him.
He convinced himself that they were fake and started increasing his power in order to create a new family for himself. This is how he was promoted to Lower Rank Five and given permission by Muzan to start the Spider Family (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 36 Page 9).
Lower Rank 6, KamanueÂ
Kamanue took Kyogai’s position after his demotion only to get killed by Muzan when he decided that the Lower Ranks were no longer needed amongst the Twelve Kizuki (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 51 – 52).
Former Lower Rank 6, KyogaiÂ
Before turning into a Demon, Kyogai was a writer. His editor criticized his work declaring he’d become boring and uninteresting, that his writing was no better than trash. He stepped on his work which extremely angered Kyogai who flew into a rage and killed him (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 25 Pages 3-5).
He was then turned into a demon by Muzan and became the Lower Rank Six, Kyogai, the Drum Demon. However, Muzan took back his title due to his lack of strength (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 23 Page 19).
He became obsessed with regaining his position and started killing and devouring more and more humans which led the Demon Slayers Corps to send troops into his mansion. The Drum Demon was finally killed by Tanjiro (Demon Slayer Manga: Chapter 25 Pages 2-16).

Conclusion
I do believe that this is the anime with the most elaborated and interesting backstories. Each character was carefully written, even the side characters were given a moment of glory as well as fascinating pasts. Each character could have their own show.
On that note, I would love one centered on the Hashira’s. Never before was I so engulfed in reading. There isn’t one character that isn’t likable in some way, yes even Zenitsu.
The hipe given to Demon Slayer is way more than just well deserved. The author did an awesome job and all the fans were more than satisfied with the result. We will still hear of Demon Slayer even after the series ends. This is a masterpiece that will make history.  I can’t wait for the rest of the manga to get animated, my heart is ready and I hope yours is too~
