When you see the title “Unique Abilities“, of course, you’d instantly think about the terms: overpowered and Kakkoii, but it turns out that unique, in the anime world, is more absurd and hilarious.

Some of the weirdest and unthinkable powers were created by mangakas. I can’t even imagine where they get their inspiration from.

However, don’t worry there are some cool ones that I managed to sneak in for you.

 

CHARACTERS IN ANIME THAT HAVE RARE POWERS

 

36. Tsunagu Hakamada (My Hero Academia)

In My Hero Academia, kids at a certain age, gain abilities called Quirks. The power of the Quirk varies depending on the person and how they use it.

The elite of the elite get to enroll in UA High School so they can one day become pro Heroes whose job is to fight villains and protect the population.

One of the students of UA High is called Tsunagu Hakamada. When I tell you what his ability is like, I believe you’re gonna laugh. However, don’t take the guy lightly because he managed to graduate and is currently working as a Pro Hero.

Tsunagu’s Quirk is called “Fiber Master”, he can manipulate the threads that make up any fabric in a certain radius.

 

35. Uiharu Kazari (A Certain Scientific Railgun)

In the world of this anime, technology and science developed to the point where people could artificially create Espers. Each Esper would possess a unique ability that no one else has.

Some abilities are basic ones like telepathy, superhuman strength, and the power to manipulate for example, electricity, however, Uiharu Kazaki has a skill that I believe doesn’t exist not only in that specific series but in the entire anime world.

Now, don’t get too excited, it’s not like a powerful or cool ability or anything, she can maintain the temperature of anything she gets in contact with. You can compare her to a very efficient thermos.

 

34. Miranda Lotto (D.Gray Man)

Gray Man is a very famous Japanese Animation series with lots and lots of unique abilities. However, some stand out more than others.

In their universe, the evil Milenium Earl is planning to eradicate the entire human species. To do so, he targets grieving people and convinces them to call out to the person they lost. The soul that comes back goes into an arterial body and they turn into what they call “Akuma”.

Those Akuma have no sense of feeling nor a will of their own and only obey the Earl. They cannot be hurt by things like guns or blades, only exorcists who managed to resonate with “Innocence” can kill them.

One of those exorcists is called Miranda Lotto, her Innocence gives her the power to control time. She can instantly heal injuries or create a special environment that stands still in the flow of time. 

 

33. Akiko Yosano (Bungo Stray Dogs)

There exists a group of supernatural investigators that only deal with mysteries related to, well, the supernatural.

However, it’s not like they deal with ghosts or spirits, those things don’t exist. It just happened that some humans possess rare powers and that fact is hidden from the public.

Just so you know, all the members of the agency are some of the few that have awakened abilities; and their nominated doctor, Akiko Yosano, was the weirdest and most gruesome one of them all. The name of her ability is “Thou Shalt Not Die”. When and only when she suffers a fatal wound, her ability would activate and bring her back to life.

Of course, she can use that ability on others, so when her patients come in, to make things faster, she puts them in a near-death state and then heals them completely.

32. Hisoka (Hunter x Hunter)

Hunters are people recognized by the government to be Elite members of society in terms of strength and intelligence. After passing an official exam where most die while participating, they get a license.

Their job consists of finding hidden treasures, investigating mysterious places, and uncovering the secrets the world holds.

Of course, not all hunters are equal, some of them, through intense training and determination, get the ability to use Nen. Depending on the contract that you form with Nen, you will awaken a special power.

In that series, Hisoka has a Nen that he calls Bungee Gum. Bungee Gum is an extension of his aura that has the property of both gum and rubber. So it extends like rubbers and sticks to his enemies like a super glue type of gum.

 

31. Minoru Mineta (My Hero Academia)

I present to you another one of the most hated anime characters in the anime world, Minoru Mineta. He is a Hero enrolled in UA High and is the most annoying and ugly little thing.

His Quirk is called “Pop Off”, it generates ball-shaped objects that grow on his head, he can pluck them and they instantly regenerate. They stick like glue to anything except Minoru and he uses them to bounce, to capture enemies, or to climb walls.

This one is also a series about wizards but it’s more on the cute side compared to Black Clover. All wizards have an affinity with an element and base their magic power on it.

Because of the restrictions of this world, you will see many characters who have the same abilities or skills that are very similar to one another and it’s extremely rare to find someone with a skill that can blow our minds.

Minerva Orland is one of those scarce characters who can definitely be described as unique. Her ability is called Territory, thanks to it she can manipulate space to a certain extent. She can teleport, generate explosions, and modify the properties of objects or living beings.

 

29. Nike Lemercier (The World is Still Beautiful)

The Sun Kingdom is a country ruled by a very young King called Livius Ifrikia, and when I say young it’s not an exaggeration since the brat is only 12 years old.

In his country, the sun always shines brightly so most of the people never experienced things like rain or storms, even the wind is only felt on rare occasions. One day, Livius heard of a faraway place where some of its people can summon rain through their songs.

Curious, he requested to marry one of the country’s Princesses. No one would ever dare to say no to the King who managed to take control of most of the world all on his own, so they sent him Princess Nike Lemercier.

The rumor was true, the Princess really possessed a very unique power, a beautiful ability that was about to change the cold King to his very core.

 

28. Vanitas (The Case Study of Vanitas)

Vampires are creatures that really exist, although the fact that they roam amongst humans is a very well hidden secret. 

However, their existence is now in danger since someone or something is stealing their true name forcing them to go on a rampage to then be exterminated by their own kind.

The one that calls himself their savior, is a member of the clan of the Blue Moon vampires and yet he is only human, his name is Vanitas. Vanitas is in possession of a very special book known as the Book of Vanitas. That very mysterious object has the ability to rewrite the world’s formulas.

Thus, Vanitas spends his time searching for sick vampires to cure. Saving the vampires of the Red Moon clan will be his ultimate revenge against the heinous things the Blue Moon vampire did to him.

 

27. Shiba Tatsuya (The Irregular at Magic High School)

And yet another Japanese anime about mages. Here as well, technology is greatly advanced, and mages were created artificially and are using devices called CADs to use magic.

Each prominent family is looking to create the best mages to move up the ranks and increase their power and position in the world. One of the most powerful and influential families is the Yotsuba family. Two unlucky siblings, Miyuki and Tatsuya, were born among them.

Miyuki is considered a genius at all levels, she’s a terrifying mage while her brother is being treated as a slave for not matching the required norms and yet he is the most powerful character in the entire series.

The guy can obliterate part of a country with just one spell, he is a master ninjutsu user, all his spells have multiple layers of security from the country’s protection, and he is a genius inventor who got magic to where it is today.

He is extraordinary and he has one more ability that makes him even more badass. He can copy and rewrite any person’s or object’s information. Thus, he can turn back time for them and any injury will be like it never occurred. He can decompose and recompose matter.

The list of his special abilities is really long. All of them are unique, overpowered, and Kakkoi. The guy is practically immortal, he can even activate his magic while unconscious through an automatic activation process.

 

26. Levy McGarden (Fairy Tail)

Levy McGarden is one of the mages of the Fairy Tail guild. Extremely intelligent, her ability matches perfectly her oversized intellect.

Her signature move is “Solid Script“. Helped by her interest in books and languages, her ability materializes letters made of magic. The word generated takes solid form in the air and has the properties of their meaning.

For example, she writes fire and throws the word on her enemy thus setting him on fire. A simple but effective move.

 

25. Kosuke Ueki (Law of Ueki)

A tournament will soon be held to decide who will become the next leader of the Heavenly World.

More than 100 “God Candidates” will be participating and they will have to search on Earth for a human vessel that will be representing them in that tournament. The winner will be given the “Blank Talent” and will get the right to choose any one ability of their choice while the God Candidate will get his dream job.

One of those vessels is called Kosuke Ueki and he is the main character of this anime. His ability is a very weird one, and in the hand of another, it is totally useless. However, Kosuke uses it in a way that always gives him the upper hand in a fight. So the ability is a Tree Making skill that turns trash into full-grown trees.

 

24. Seryu Ubiquitous (Akame Ga Kill)

Seryu Ubiquitous is famous for being one of the most hated anime characters in the anime world and for good reasons, however, her ability is undeniably unique. At first, we all thought that she was a sane person that really desired justice for the world, but we were all royally duped when her true personality surfaced.

Seryu is in fact a mentally deranged character that really gives the creeps and she is one of the main enemies of the infamous Night Raid.

Her special ability isn’t really her own, it just happened that she is in possession of a very rare biological Teigu or Imperial Arms with unique powers and abilities. That weapon that she calls Koro is shaped like a dog and well, acts like a dog when it’s not in attack mode.

When she engages in battle, Koro grows exponentially and gets the ability to expand his huge mouth that is hiding inside a series of terrifying razor-sharp fangs.

 

23. Takemichi Hanagaki (Tokyo Revengers)

Takemichi is a Time Traveler. During his miserable adult life, he learned that his ex-girlfriend was murdered and went back to the past to stop the tragedy.

Not only does he possess a time-traveling ability, he also develops a foresight ability that lets him see a glimpse of the future that he now changed.

 

22. Lelouch Lamperouge (Code Geass)

Lelouch, the main character of Code Geass, is the forsaken Prince of Britannia. He was living in hiding with his sister Nunally when due to a certain turn of events, he found himself in the middle of a bloody battlefield where the Britannian soldiers were exterminating the Japanese rebellion.

He was about to get killed when a mysterious woman called C.C took a bullet in his stead and bestowed upon him an incredible power, the power of Kings, Geass.

Lelouch isn’t the only one who possesses Geass, however, each Geass is unique and has different abilities. Lelouch’s Geass can, through direct eye contact, force the target to obey any command Lelouch makes. This power became Lelouch’s stepping stone on his road to destroying the current world and rebuilding a new one.

 

21. Koenma (Yu Yu Hakusho)

King Enma Jr. most commonly known as Koenma is the son of King Enma and the current leader of the Spirit World in the series, Yu Yu Hakusho.

His power is rarely shown in the anime, however, it is a critical one throughout the story as it can separate the Spirit World from the human World.

His ability is called Mafuukan, it’s an ultimate defensive spell that creates a Barrier net that can separate the Human World from the Spirit World. It’s almost impossible to destroy or breach, with it, he can defend the entire Earth from the Demon threat if necessary.

 

20. Meliodas (The Seven Deadly Sins)

 Meliodas is the main character of that Japanese animation series. He is the leader of a notorious group of knights called The Seven Deadly Sins.

After saving their country from the demon invasion, they were accused of heinous acts and labeled as wanted criminals.

They left the country and temporarily disbanded the group until a new threat looming over their home appeared. They gathered and picked up their weapons once again for the greater good of the world.

Between the seven members, Meliodas is the strongest. His ultimate move is called Full Counter. When an attack is thrown at him he can redirect it with full force to the enemy. No matter how strong the attack is, there is nothing he can’t deflect, no attack can touch him.

 

19. Zagred (Black Clover)

In this series, wizards are the ones who make up society and the ultimate goal of practically all of them is to someday become strong enough to obtain the title of “Wizard King”

Their universe is filled with people that are unbelievably talented magic users. The amount of skills and abilities you can gather is limitless.

The variety of unique skills is huge but there is one that’s more awesome than all the others and it is known as “Kotodama” or Word Soul Magic.

The one who possesses that ability is called Zagred, a devil with a demented mind. With that power, he can alter reality and create physical or magical objects out of thin air.

 

18. Knuckle Bine (Hunter X Hunter)

Knuckle Bine is a character that you can find in the 2011 version of Hunter X Hunter in the Chimera Ant Arc. Extremely strong and talented, Gon never had a chance when he faced off against him and this was all thanks to his very unique Nen ability.

His Nen is a super complicated one so please bear with me while I try to explain how it works. The ability is called Hakoware, it materializes an indestructible mascot named the “Amortizing Power Redirector (A.P.R.)” on the enemy after suffering from a blow dealt by Knuckle.

The A.P.R. then starts lending the caster’s aura to the person attached to it. There is a number that appears on his forehead of the A.P.R. that increases the aura it gets. That number is equal to interest.

The only way to return the aura to Knuckle is to deal damage to him so the number displayed on the doll decreases. However, Knuckle will not suffer any real damage until the number hits 0. But the reverse is also true. The enemy will not suffer damage from Knuckles’ attack, he will only lend him more aura thus increasing the number displayed on the mascot.

When the total amount of borrowed aura exceeds the target’s remaining aura, the target “goes bankrupt” where he will have to repay a debt that he can’t possibly match and he will eventually lose the battle.

Then, bankruptcy turns the mascot into the “Individual Ren Suppressor (I.R.S.)” that will stick to the debtor for 30 days and forces them to maintain their Zetsu until the full debt is repaid.

 

17. Sabrac (Burning Eyed Shana)

Mysterious beings from a parallel world made their way to Earth and subsisted by eating the very essence of humans. The victims not only lose their lives but also end up forgotten, it’s as if they never existed to begin with.

The ones in charge of stopping the massacre and saving humankind are called Flame Hazes. Sabrac is a notorious assassin and an enemy of the Flame Hazes.

His signature move is called “Stigma”. After dealing an injury to his target he will inflict a Stigma on it making the wound grow over time until the target eventually dies.

 

16. Rohan Kishibe (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure)

 Rohan Kishibe’s Stand is called “Heaven’s Door”. It gives him the ability to transform individuals into “human books“. The person’s body starts opening up like a book and you can find written pages inside.

The pages reveal all the information about the person who was struck by that ability. If that person is a Stand user like himself, a detailed description of its ability can be found inside those pages.

However, Rohan uses his skill for his mangaka job, he tends to find inspiration in the lives of others.

 

15. Shamna (Code Geass)

Shamna is the main protagonist of the movie “Code Geass Lelouch of the Re;surrection”. She is a very powerful Geass user that really gave Lelouch a very hard time.

Her Geass ability activates after her death and brings her soul 6 hours into the past while retaining all the memories of the future events.

Every scheme that Lelouch prepares would already be known to Shamna before the battles even begin.

If Lelouch wasn’t so shrewd and so terrifyingly intelligent no one would have managed to ever defeat her.

 

14. Lain Iwakura (Serial Experiment Lain)

Lain Iwakura is the main character of the series, Serial Experiment Lain. She was nothing more than a high school introvert when she received an email from a dead classmate.

The mail opened and she was transported into a world that resembles the internet called the Wire. As a being that can now access both worlds, she became a barrier between reality and the Wire, the new Goddess of that new world.

Thus, she acquired special abilities. First, her IQ dramatically increased, she also can warp reality as she desires, and finally, the most interesting power she has is the possibility to control that parallel world.

 

13. Trafalgar D. Law (One Piece)

All the pirates in the world are searching for the legendary treasure, “One Piece”, that was hidden by the Pirate King. Some of those pirates acquired special powers after eating Devil Fruits. And most of the Devil Fruit users became infamous on the ocean.

One of the captains of the worst generation is called Trafalgar D. Law and he is the captain of the Heart Pirates. He also has a really cool nickname, “Surgeon of Death“

He is a person that consumed a Devil Fruit, a Paramecia-type called the Ope Ope no Mi. It gives him the ability to create an enclosed area where he can manipulate the fabric of space.

Inside that space, he has complete control over everything. He uses that ability to “operate” freely and within the “operating room” that he creates, he can move objects telekinetically and swap locations of two different targets through teleportation.

 

12. Majin Buu (Dragon Ball Z)

Dragon Ball is one of the most famous anime ever created and the villains that appear in it are just as famous.

Majin Buu was one of the intense and most terrifying villains that our heroes had to face. Extremely strong, maybe even a bit too much, he had a very unique ability that perfectly suited his first form.

He acts exactly like an overgrown baby and loves his stomach more than anything. Well, his power can turn anything his beam hits, including humans, into candy that he will then devour.

11. Asta (Black Clover)

In a world where magic is part of your everyday life, all the mages are pursuing the same goal—obtaining the title  “Wizard King”, and one of those dreamers is a young man named Asta, although he was believed to be powerless when the series began.

Turns out that he received a five-leaf clover grimoire and became an overpowered demon-like main character.

Asta is a magician and yet can’t use magic. Instead, he uses a skill called Anti-Magic to nullify all magic around him.

 

10. Nelliel Tu Odelschwanck (Bleach)

Nelliel Tu Odelschwanck or Nel for short is the former Espada number 3. She has two forms, a childish one and an adult one. She also has many abilities and I’m gonna highlight just one of them.

In her Child Form, her saliva possesses a minor healing ability. To activate that ability she has to forcibly make herself vomit by massaging the uvula and throwing up on the target she wants to heal. She calls that ability Nel’s Shower.

Did you realize that all unique abilities are super disturbing ones?

 

9. Tama (One Piece)

Tama is another One Piece character that made her debut during the Wano Arc. She ate a Devil Fruit and acquired a rare power.

By pinching her cheek, she can squeeze out a Dango. When she feeds that Dango to an animal, she becomes its master. That also works on most of the Beasts Pirates who all are artificially made Devil Fruits which gave them some kind of animal trait.

So technically, if she desired, she could make all Kaido’s subordinates turn against him and make them obey her alone.

 

8. Kite (Hunter X Hunter)

Like Knuckle, Kite is also a character that made his debut in the Chimera Ant Arc. His Nen ability is called Crazy Slots. When activated a clown will appear that can summon weapons.

However, Kite can’t choose which weapon he desires to use since a roulette will be picked for him.

On the clown’s tongue will appear numbers that go from 1 to 9, each number represents a weapon. When the roulette stops the weapon that the number represents will appear in Kite’s arms. 

 

7. Sana (Alice & Zouroku)

On the outside, Sana should be an ordinary brat, however, the girl possesses a rare skill called “Alice’s Dream.”

That skill lets her create anything that comes from her imagination and she has been using it in that disgusting lab where she is being used as a test subject.

Fed up, she desired to see what the outside world looked like and escaped the wretched place. Outside, she gets acquainted with a stubborn jiji florist called Zouroku Kashimura and he gets him mixed up in her troubles.

Instead of abandoning the little girl to fend for herself, he decided to help her and even thoroughly lectured her pursuers. He then welcomes Sana into his home and you will start to follow the daily life of a very odd match.

6. Yuu (Charlotte)

Yuu is a normal narcissistic high schooler that possesses a very strange ability. He can possess the body of a person for 5 seconds. He used that ability to get perfect scores on tests and create perfect scenarios to make girls fall for him.

At first, he thought that that’s all his ability can do, he also thought that he was the only human with powers. Turns out he was wrong. If he possesses another ability user, not only will he acquire their power, the target will turn back to being a normal powerless human.

So Yuu started going around collecting all the abilities of every special human to make them his own.

5. Light Yagami (Death Note)

Light Yagami is the main character of the masterpiece called Death Note. He is an A student with a terrifying intellect that made him a genius investigator and yet he is still in high school.

One day, he saw a book fall from the sky. Curious, he picks it up. On the cover, he can read the words, “Death Note”

Inside, the instruction manual is written. Write the name of the person you want to kill while having his or her face in mind and 40 seconds later that person will die from a heart attack.

Also out of curiosity, he tests the notebook and its power turns out to be real. Light then begins a purging journey where he will eradicate all evil people from the face of the Earth to create his Utopia where he will rule as God.

 

4. Dio Brando (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders)

Dio is a vampire, a Stand user, and the main antagonist of the series JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. His unique Stand is called The World and it works like this: the Stand is not just an extraordinarily overpowered fighter, it can also stop time.

Dio also got a second Stand that has a divination ability, theoretically, that Stand should have been the ability of the late Jonathan Joestar, the owner of the body that Dio is currently using.

Add some vampire abilities to the mix and you got a very powerful DIO.

 

3. Gojo Satoru (Jujutsu Kaisen)

Curses are terrifying spirits that are created thanks to the malice and negativity of humanity. Those curses can’t be seen by normal people but still have the power to hurt or kill them.

The ones who are in charge of protecting the population from those supernatural beings are jujutsu sorcerers who can manipulate and use cured energy like a weapon. Depending on their skills and talent, the abilities of those sorcerers vary and the one with the most distinguishable power is undeniably Gojo Satoru.

Gojo is the most powerful character in that series, he is said to be even stronger than Sukuna Ryoumen, the King of Curses.

Now, Gojo has multiple overpowered techniques but the most unique one is, from my point of view, Unlimited Void. That technique is Gojo’s Domain Expansion. It materializes a metaphysical space that forces his enemies to reveal information boundlessly while limiting their thinking process.

 

2. Shota Aizawa (My Hero Academia)

Aizawa is also known as the famous and heroic Eraser Head, he is a pro Hero and a teacher at UA High.

His Quirk is called Erasure and it has the ability to completely nullify his opponent’s Quirk by looking at them directly in the eyes.

In this universe, an evil organization is planning on confiscating everyone’s hair. If they have no hair, they have no freedom, is what they say.

Bo-bobo, who was trained in the way of the hair, he wasn’t going to give up on them without a fight. Thus, he decides to overthrow the evil empire and restore the hair of the people.

Bo-bobo’s signature ability is called Hanage Shinken, translated to English it is called “Super Fist of the Nose Hair“. That special technique stretches his nose hairs to turn them into whips or ropes that can immobilize his enemies.
