Haruchiyo Sanzu is a character that has been in the dark for a long time. He has mainly been a supporting character until this point and people didn’t really pay any attention to him.
But times have changed and with the recent turn of events, it is no surprise that fans are taking an interest in Haruchiyo Sanzu again. This is why today, I am going to be discussing the character wiki of Haruchiyo Sanzu, covering his background and lore. It will give you all the necessary information that you need to know about this interesting character.
Appearance
Sanzu Haruchiyo is quite young with a lean and slim body. His hair color has been shown contrasting to each other in the manga and anime. In the anime, he has a blonde hair color while in the manga it has a pinkish rosy appearance.
Being the older brother of Senju Kawaragi, he shares a lot of similarities with her. This includes the droopy eyes and the extra long eyelashes. It is like they are a characteristic feature of their family.
During his Tokyo Manji days, he mostly stayed quiet while wearing a mask and his gang uniform. In the Bonten timeline, when he finally removes his mask, two scars near his lip corners become visible (Tokyo Revengers Manga: Chapter 201).
He is also seen wearing a more formal dress with bonten tattooed on his arms. Another point to add during his Tokyo Manji days are the piercings in his ears which he has four of them.
When he was a bit younger, he still had that stylish appearance. Except that time, he used a lot of hair gel to comb his hair to one side. He was also never seen wearing the mask during that time which of course, changed after he crossed paths with Yasuhiro Muto (Tokyo Revengers Manga: Chapter 206). He had also started to work on his piercing at that time with only one visible on his right ear.
Personality
Calm
The one personality that can massively describe Haruchiyo is his calm demeanor. He rarely gets excited over anything or makes a big fuss. He was part of the 5th division in the Tokyo Manji Gang and also happened to be its vice-captain. But since he was out of action for most of the parts, people tend to forget that important piece of information.
Less Talkative
We have hardly seen Haruchiyo Sanzu speaking about anything in the series. This is also an attribute related to his calm personality. Despite being the vice-captain, he was often lost in the shadows of the other members who stole the spotlight. This doesn’t mean that Haruchiyo was a useless member.
He made his moves in silence which made it impossible for anyone to track him. This is also one of the reasons he managed to keep himself out of trouble every time. He never wastes his energy on things that are unnecessary to him. In this way, he climbed the ranks and became pivotal to Mikey’s Bonten in a different timeline.
Manipulative
The previous two personality traits are extremely important for Haruchiyo not to let anyone know of his ability to manipulate others easily. Since he doesn’t really talk with others that much, people don’t even cast a shadow of suspicion over him.
It is all too easy for Haruchiyo to fulfill his actual purpose in that way. He will be out of people’s eyes and go about filling their ears with his own words.
This is also why he can become a very handy asset for any gang member. It is not always about the brawny guy who can punch right through people. Sometimes, it’s also about these characters who work behind the scenes.
Wild Beast
It is crazy to believe but Haruchiyo used to be a wild beast when he was much younger. He lived off the adrenaline rush and didn’t care about anything else. He became such a troublesome character that even the rest of the gangs were concerned.
He was like a wild bull, who couldn’t be contained by anyone. However, the exception in this case is Muto. Not only did Haruchiyo start wearing the mask after meeting him but his personality also took a sudden turn (Tokyo Revengers Manga: Chapter 206).
Psychopath
In the Bonten timeline, Haruchiyo’s personality went out of control. He was not the cool and calm Haruchiyo that we were used to knowing. He was more talkative and the loudest one in the room (Tokyo Revengers Manga: Chapter 201).
It was revealed to be an effect of the drugs he used to take. His old childhood habit of living on the adrenaline rush was back and it again became a concern for other gangs.
His insane behavior in Mikey’s gang also helped it to propel the gang to the number one position but at the cost of his calm and collected self.
Strengths and Skills
Manipulation
The only skill of Haruchiyo that we are sure of at the moment is manipulation. He was great at it and it became a trademark of his throughout the story. We haven’t seen much of Haruchiyo’s power in a one-on-one scenario, so that still remains a mystery.
Haruchiyo’s expertise on this skill can be further solidified by the fact that he managed to manipulate a strong character like Mucho. He even disposed of him after he betrayed Mikey for whom he had great admiration (Tokyo Revengers Manga: Chapter 206).
Facts
- Haruchiyo started wearing his signature black mask after meeting Yasuhiro Muto (Tokyo Revengers Manga: Chapter 206).
- One of the meanings of his name is spring which can be traced back to the meaning of his brother’s name, which is bright.
Past/History
I have already discussed some aspects of Haruchiyo’s past life mentioning how he was a wild and uncontrollable beast. But the most important one was his meeting with Yasuhiro Muto. It definitely changed him and he ultimately followed Muto to the Tokyo Manji gang.
It is also crazy to think about the fact that Haruchiyo killed the same person who changed his life (Tokyo Revengers Manga: Chapter 206). His psychological problems started from his childhood and his ideals were messed up. Once he started following someone, he lost all of his senses. The most stable that we have seen him was during his time at Toman.
Affiliations
Tokyo Manji Gang
The very first gang that we ever saw Haruchiyo aligned with is the Tokyo Manji Gang. He acted as the vice-captain of their fifth division and didn’t seem like a guy who would cause any troubles.
He always strictly followed the orders given to him by his captain, Muto, and carried them out simply. His time at Toman was definitely more peaceful than the other gangs he was part of.
Tenjiku
When Mucho betrayed the entire Tokyo Manji Gang and took the entire fifth division along with him, Haruchiyo was also a part of it. It was quite unclear where his loyalties were because despite joining Tenjiku, he ended up killing Mucho for backstabbing Mikey (Tokyo Revengers Manga: Chapter 206).
In all likelihood, Haruchiyo went along with the plans to prevent any suspicion falling upon him. He was after all the vice-captain of their division and it wouldn’t have been possible for him to show his cards then and there. The fact that he has always idolized Mikey’s ways became crystal clear after he joined Bonten and the Kantou Manji Gang.
Bonten
Bonten is an alternate timeline that happens in the future where Haruchiyo Sanzu is a part of it. Not only that, but Sanzu also happens to be the number two in that gang, just behind Mikey. His obsession with Mikey seemed to have multiplied many folds in the Bonten timeline (Tokyo Revengers Manga: Chapter 201).
He was even using a gun there and was ready to fire it off if anyone disrespected Mikey in any way. Takemichi was extremely lucky that he was not killed during that encounter. He got to see an entirely different side to Sanzu in the Bonten timeline. And it was only from there that people started to take note of him.
Kantou Manji Gang
In the current timeline that is going on in Tokyo Revengers right now, Sanzu is a part of the Kantou Manji Gang. This is likely the gang that turned into Bonten in a different timeline. We have seen Sanzu in action for the Kantou Manji Gang in the Three Deities War and he certainly looks to be an important member.
He will likely be the number two again at a certain point without any doubt. It also remains to be seen if he has improved in terms of his physical prowess or if he still relies on his manipulation tactics.
Relationships
Senju Kawaragi
Senju is the younger sister of Sanzu and they don’t particularly share a sweet relationship. On one hand, we have the perfect sibling relationship of Tanjirou and Nezuko. On the other hand, there is the sibling duo of Senju and Sanzu. Sanzu is completely indifferent towards her or her gang activities. It is likely that he doesn’t even consider her as someone important to meddle in her matters.
Akashi Takeomi
Despite being family members, Sanzu’s feelings towards Akashi still remain a mystery. Akashi is much older than him and he was also close to Mikey’s brother. This is why Sanzu can’t be completely indifferent to Takeomi. He is not exactly an emotional person so we can’t also expect him to burst up and reveal his feelings regarding his brother.
Mucho
It’s kind of hard to tell what kind of relationship he had with Mucho. On the outside, it always seemed like he was a loyal subordinate to him but in reality his idolism with Mikey was insane. Maybe in the beginning, he considered Mucho’s ideals to be strong and wore the mask as a sign of his dedication. But meeting Mikey clearly changed him and he disposed of Mucho after pulling a successful manipulation trick on him.
Plot
Haruchiyo Sanzu is not exactly involved in the main plot of the story. He has been quiet for the most parts and the only time we heard him talking loudly was after he became the number 2 in Bonten (Tokyo Revengers Manga: Chapter 196).
Other than that part he has mostly been out of the scenes. Even in the Tokyo Manji Gang, we barely saw him in the picture. He was probably busy manipulating Mucho on the sides. No wonder it is said that Haruchiyo excels at that skill. He always considered Mikey as his idol and even went as far as killing Mucho when he betrayed Mikey (Tokyo Revengers Manga: Chapter 206).
In my opinion it didn’t even pain him to kill someone who had given him the black mask he was always seen wearing (Tokyo Revengers Manga: Chapter 206). That’s the kind of person Haruchiyo was!
