Hello guys! Welcome to this brand new and very exciting article! As you can see and deduce from the title, we will talk about Bleach! I’m sure you have already heard about it, after all it’s one of the most popular manga ever. Also, I think most of you know it by now, but I’ll say it anyway. A new Bleach animated series is going to air in Autumn 2022 and it will adapt the last arc of the manga. Personally, I’m looking forward to it, since Bleach is one of my favorite series ever and contains some characters I really love (yeah, of course I’m talking about Captain Hitsugaya). 

Anyway, since this date is getting closer and closer, I think a lot of people would love to catch up to the anime, so that they can fully enjoy the new series. This is one of the main reasons why I’m writing this article. So count on me as your guide upon binge-watching! The animated series is composed of 366 episodes. They are a loooot, right? But fear not. A lot of these are just filler episodes you can totally skip since they aren’t part of the main storyline and are just extras.

Plot

Ichigo Kurosaki is a fifteen years old high school student who lives together with his father, Isshin, and with his two little sisters, Karin and Yuzu. Ichigo has a special ability that allows him to see, communicate and touch ghosts; this is possible thanks to his great spiritual power. His life undergoes a drastic change when a Shinigami named Rukia Kuchiki crosses his path in search of a Hollow, an evil spirit. During the confrontation with it, Rukia gets seriously injured and is forced to transfer part of her powers to Ichigo, who accepts the Shinigami’s proposal to protect his family. 

However, the transfer process goes wrong and Ichigo absorbs all of Rukia’s powers, becoming a full shinigami and easily defeating the Hollow. Having lost her powers, Rukia becomes stuck in the world of the living until she regains her strength. Meanwhile, Ichigo replaces Rukia in her duties as a Shinigami, fighting against the Hollows and leading the souls to the afterlife, known as the Soul Society.

 

Bleach Arcs

Arc 1: The Substitute Soul Reaper (Episode 1-20)

As the first arc of the series, it introduces some of the main characters and the main plot. We meet the protagonist Ichigo, a boy who should be normal, but actually isn’t, since he can see spirits. This is also how he meets Rukia Kuchiki, a Shinigami who can’t be seen by normal humans. She fights against a Hollow, but she asks Ichigo for help allowing him to temporarily take her power. However, Ichigo absorbs all her powers, so he is forced to replace Rukia in her Shinigami duties. 

There aren’t any filler episodes in this arc! 

 

Arc 2: The Entry (Episode 21-41)

Rukia is about to get a death penalty because she is now labeled as a wanted criminal. Ichigo and his friends go to Soul Society to rescue her. Here we get to know the Gotei 13, that is a military organization composed of 13 divisions and based on ranks. The Shinigami who are part of it learn about the intruders and are sent to capture them. Among the higher ranks of the Gotei 13, there is Rukia’s brother, Byakuya, who is also the captain of the 6th division and the one who brought Rukia back to Soul Society. 

This arc includes a single filler episode (Episode 33) that you can skip!

 

Arc 3: The Rescue (Episode 42-63)

Yoruichi starts training Ichigo so that he can learn to use his Bankai, the most powerful evolution of Shinigami’s weapons. Also, he has found a new ally now: Renji, Rukia’s friend and Byakuya’s vice-captain. He is determined to fight alongside Ichigo and his friends to save her. However, in order to do so, the ultimate enemy is Byakuya himself and Ichigo is the one who engages in a fight against him. Meanwhile, something strange is happening in Gotei 13. Captain Hitsugaya has discovered that there are some traitors among its ranks and he is determined to find out what is actually going on. 

The filler episode here is Episode 50!

 

Arc 4: The Bount (Episode 64-91)

This entire arc is a filler! You can skip 28 episodes! I’ll tell you anyway, very briefly, what it is about. 

Ichigo and his friends go back to the real world and resume their daily life. However, three mysterious people appear and convince Ichigo and his friends to participate in a dangerous game. Later, we find out that they are actually modified souls created by Urahara. They can detect the presence of the Bount, who are artificially created creatures that can live on by eating souls. Ichigo will have to face their threats.

 

Arc 5: The Assault (Episode 65-109)

Another filler arc that is the sequel of the previous one. 

The fight against the Bount continues in Soul Society, where they are way stronger thanks to the spirit particles which the environment is made of. However, here Ichigo can count on his Shinigami allies to help him in defeating the dangerous group.

 

Arc 6: Arrancar: The Appearance (Episode 110-131)

Yay, let’s go back to the main plot! A new transfer student arrives at Ichigo’s school. His name is Hirako and he is part of the Visored, a group of Shinigami who also possess Hollow powers. At the same time, new enemies appear. They are the Arrancar, powerful beings who brutally attack Ichigo’s group. Hitsugaya and some other Shinigami come to help them, but the battle is very fierce. Also, Ichigo struggles to contain the Hollow powers he has hidden inside his body. 

There are some mixed canon/filler episodes in this arc, but I suggest you watch them, so that you won’t miss any important point in the plot. But you can skip the last four episodes (episodes 128-131), since they are entirely fillers! ‘

 

Arc 7: The Arrancar Part 2: The Hueco Mundo Sneak Entry (Episode 132-151)

Ichigo manages to master his new Hollow powers and fights against the Arrancar Grimmjow. He doesn’t defeat him, but he is saved by his friends’ intervention. Meanwhile, Orihime is taken to Hueco Mundo by Ulqiorra and she bids Ichigo goodbye. However, our protagonist is determined to follow and save her. Chad, Uryu, Rukia and Renji decide to go with him. Thanks to Urahara, they manage to enter Hueco Mundo, but now they have to get ready to face new battles and powerful enemies in order to bring their friend back. 

You can skip a lot of episodes in this arc! These are episodes from 132 to 137 and episodes from 147 to 149.

 

Arc 8: The Arrancar Part 3: The Fierce Fight  (Episode 152-167)

Everybody is focused on their own battle against their own enemy. After Ichigo defeats the Espada Dordoni, Ulquiorra appears in front of him and provokes him. The hero tries to fight against him, but the enemy is too strong and defeats him easily. Orihime, thanks to Grimmjow’s help, who wants a chance to finally end his clash with Ichigo, reaches his friend to heal him, so that he can now face Grimmjow with his full strength.

You can fully enjoy this arc without skipping any episode! 

 

Arc 9: The New Captain Shūsuke Amagai (Episode 168-189)

Yeah, we have another filler arc here. Feel free to skip it! 

A new captain is in charge of the 3rd division. His name is Shusuke Amagai. Meanwhile, Ichigo and co. meet Princess Rurichiyo, who is targeted by some assassins. She gets kidnapped, but we soon find out that the mastermind behind this whole operation is Amagai himself. Ichigo will have to fight against him with the help of the Gotei 13.

 

Arc 10: The Arrancar Part 4: Arrancar vs Soul Reaper (Episode 190-205)

After Grimmjow’s defeat, Ichigo, who is tired from his fight, is overpowered by other enemies. However, he is helped by an unexpected ally. Meanwhile, the Gotei 13 takes action against the Espada. The problem is that Orihime is taken hostage once again and brought to Aizen, who now goes to the human world to destroy Karakura Town. 

You can skip episodes 204 and 205!

 

Arc 11: Turn Back The Pendulum (Episode 206-212)

This arc is quite special, since the past of some shinigami from 110 years ago is shown. For the first time we see Urahara as the newly introduced captain of the 12th division. However,  he can’t get along with his vice-captain Hiyori. Meanwhile, Hirako, the captain of the 5th division, finds out that his second in command, Aizen, is hiding something. 

No filler episodes here!

 

Arc 12: The Arrancar Part 5: Battle in Karakura (Episode 213-229)

The Gotei 13 is ready to protect Karakura Town and fight against Aizen and his Arrancars. Aizen wants to use this town to invade Soul Society and destroy it. Every shinigami is engaged in his/her/their own fight against the enemies. Meanwhile, Ichigo and co. are still in Hueco Mundo, trying to rescue Orihime. Finally, he has the chance to face Ulquiorra. 

The filler episodes in the arc are the first two ones (Episodes 213-214) and the last two ones (Episodes 228-229)!

 

Arc 13: Zanpakutō: The Alternate Tale (Episode 230-265)

A whole filler arc that you can totally skip! It’s about Zanpakuto, Shinigami’s weapons.

The Zanpakuto are rebelling against their masters thanks to Muramasa, who has freed their spirits. He leads them to a confrontation with their own Shinigami, who now can’t use their weapons and are unable to defend themselves. Soul Society is thrown into chaos. Will the Shinigami be able to win this hopeless battle and regain control of their own Zanpakuto?

 

Arc 14: The Arrancar Part 6: Fall of the Espada (Episode 266-316)

Ichigo is still struggling against Ulqiorra, while his friends are facing their own battles. Ulquiorra shows his opponent his true strength, while Orihime is watching their fight helplessly. Ichigo is forced to call upon his Hollow powers, finally putting an end to this confrontation. Meanwhile, in Karakura Town, the Gotei 13 continues battling the Espada, together with their new allies, the Visored. Ichigo reaches them and prepares himself for the final battle against Aizen.

Episode 266 is just a recap of the previous events in the anime. Also, you can skip Episodes 287, 298, 299, 303-305, 311-316.

 

Arc 15: Gotei 13 Invading Army (Episode 317-342)

Another filler arc! But pay attention! You can skip all episodes but Episode 342. It’s important.

After Aizen’s defeat, things are back to normal, until mysterious disappearances take place in Soul Society. As Shinigami begins investigating, they arrest Ichigo. Also, the Gotei 13’s evil copies start to appear and fight against their counterparts. 

 

Arc 16: The Lost Agent (Episode 343-366)

One year and half after the battle against Aizen, Ichigo, who doesn’t have his Shinigami powers anymore, is now living a normal high school life. However, strange aggressions start to happen in town that involve Ichigo’s friend, Uryu. Our protagonist is very frustrated, because now he is unable to help them. That’s when he meets a boy called Ginjo, who uses a mysterious power called Fullbring and invites him to join his group Xcution. Ichigo, who wants to regain his powers, accepts the offer, but he soon finds out that Ginjo is a traitor. Luckily, the Gotei 13 arrives to help him face Xcution. 

This is the last arc of the Bleach anime adaptation, and it only has one filler episode (Episode 355).

 

Conclusion

As you can see, there are a lot of filler episodes in the Bleach animated adaptation. Some of them are fun to watch, since you could see some funny aspects of the characters or interesting interactions between them, but the whole filler arcs are quite boring. The plot is very static and the newly introduced characters are boring. Anyway, if you have time to spare, you can still try to watch them and see for yourself!
