The clashing sounds of metal and battles of huge monsters against mecha armies always gets my blood flowing high. Anime like Gurren Lagann, Code Geass, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Samurai 7 are masterpieces of mecha anime, but there is one that is most popular among mecha anime.

The longest and the most loved mecha anime, which sometimes becomes confusing for a new mecha anime watcher trying to find out which one he/she should watch first. The anime I was talking about is the Gundam Series. Gundam is not just an anime, it has become a pop culture worldwide.

It has influenced many anime lovers and created a space for mecha settings of storytelling in anime. Before Gundam, Robots were introduced as only used as weapons of destruction, but this series shows a bond between a robot or mech and its pilot.

This is a guide for new Mecha lovers on a journey to the universe of Gundam. A journey they will always remember and cherish.

Mobile Suit Gundam (1979-1980)

The story tells us about a distant future where an organization known as the Earth Federation has become strong and is testing a new type of mech which is known by the name Gundam, piloted by Amuro Ray against Zeon. This consists of 43 episodes that started the journey of a great franchise in Mech anime history.

This anime has 3 movies. The first two are Mobile Suit Gundam (1981) and Mobile Suit Gundam: Soldiers of Sorrow (1981), which were released in 1981. The third film, Mobile Suit Gundam: Encounters in Space (1982), was later released in 1982.

Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (1985-1986)

The story takes place immediately eight years after the events of the Mobile Suit Gundam (1979-1980). After being victorious, the Earth Federation has moved away from their goal and has chosen a corrupt way of creating an elite force called the Titan, which is used for their own personal interest and gain.

The 17-year-old Kamille Bidan who lives in the colony, Green Noa, becomes a part of bigger events after assaulting a Titan officer and coming into possession of the Titan’s prototype Gundam. A breath-taking adventure begins.

The anime has 3 movies that were released a lot later than the main series: Heirs to the Stars (2005) released on May 28, 2005, Lovers (2005) released on October 29, 2005, and Love is the Pulse of the Stars (2006) released on March 6, 2006.

In honor of Gundam’s 25th anniversary, the old 50-episode series was remade into a trilogy called Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: A New Translation. It is where the story of the series is finely upheld by new generation anime artwork and soundtracks.

Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ (1986-1987)

As the story continued after the events of Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (1985-1986), this story follows the story of the Anti Earth Union Group that shows the end of some old enemies and the rise of a few new ones who are far more dangerous than the former enemy. This makes the environment hard for the protagonist to overcome the obstacles in his goal. A total of 47 episodes and 2 OVA episodes were released far later in 2009 making this series worth watching.

Mobile Suit SD Gundam (1988,1989,1991,1993)

This is a short story about the main events which is presented as a mini funny series set for the child viewers of the series. It consists of 5 movies and 9 OVA episodes from (1989–1991) and a compilation of 8 TV series episodes aired in 1993.

Mobile Suit Victory Gundam (1993-1994)

Victory Gundam succeeded the crossbones conflict which was shown in the movie: Mobile Suit Gundam F91 (1991). The Earth federation, an organization from the first Gundam series was greatly weakened and have lost their powers in the fight against BESPA. Now, their only hope is League Militias. Together, the greatly weak Earth Federation and League Militias battle against BESPA forces with their might. This series consists of 51 TV episodes.

Mobile Fighter G Gundam (1994-1995)

A completely different spin-off in a new era, where the earth is ruined and every country is now an individual space colony. A winning country is selected to rule the earth for 4 years by a Gundam tournament where pilots represent their countries. After much exciting competition, the last standing pilot and his country are announced as winners, and now permitted to rule the world until the next tournament for 4 years. 49 episodes made this series wonderful.

Mobile Suit Gundam Wing (1995-1996)

Adapted from the book of the same title of 11 volumes, A story of revenge, friendship, plotting. That is all in Mobile Suit Gundam wing (1995-1996). Five pilots thought to be enemies become friends as they find out all of them are after the same enemies and having the same goals. Composed of 49 Episodes and 4 special episodes made this series fun to watch.

After War Gundam X (1996)

The story takes place after the 7th war. In post-apocalyptic earth, people are living by collecting scraps from the war, Gundam and its weapons are now available to civilians and other organizations of the Earth. An organization named the new federation is trying to bring order. What will happen next? Another war? How would it unfold? Just watch the 39 episodes and you will find out!

Turn A Gundam (1999-2000)

The story takes place on Earth at a time when it is inhabitable, and most of the population now living on the moon for two thousand years are known as moonrace. Moonrace is an advanced and knowledgeable race where the people living on the earth rely on primitive technology compared to them. It wants to return to their home planet, so they sent 3 teens on earth to check, but they ended up living on earth for a year and having a connection to the people living on it. Suddenly, people from the moon start invading the earth and an Old Gundam was discovered which can stand against them. 50 episodes and 2 compilation movies in 2002 fulfilled this series.

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED (2002-2003)

Earth is divided between two groups: Natural human and Enhanced human beings. Because of their differences, a war broke down between them. A neutral colony living peacefully during the great war that was happening around the galaxy. But when the opposing side attempts to take control over the colony, Kira Yamato, a genetically enhanced superhuman, becomes the pilot of an advanced mobile suit and fights for freedom. 50 episodes and 2 OVA and 3 Specials in 2004 completed the series.

Superior Defender Gundam Force (2003-2004)

When the City of Neotopia was attacked by a force named Dark Axis which is a super dimensional being. City of Neotopia where machines and life force co-existed in harmony for a long time assigned a super dimensional guard named Captain Gundam with his team to fight the Dark Axis. The series may not be as dark as its successors, but it is fun to watch and has an interesting plot. A total of 52 Episodes are made mainly for child viewers.

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny (2004-2005)

A sequel of previously loved anime and manga Mobile Suit Gundam SEED (2002- 2003), this series appears hoping to give the story a new turn. 50 Episodes, 1 OVA in 2004, and 4 Completion episodes in 2006 were aired for this series. Though it was not as successful as its previous successors, its sales were high on DVD.

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED C.E. 73: Stargazer (2006)

This is a side story of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny, taking place after the Break The World incident where Stargazer suits are basically produced for exploration. But, there is more to them than meets the eye in this 1 OVA episode.

SD Gundam Sangokuden Brave Battle Warriors (2010)

It is a special series with 51 TV episodes and 1 Movie. Story settings are set in the three kingdom era, where SD Gundams are represented as the heroes of that period.

Mobile Suit Gundam AGE (2011-2012)

This series is divided into 3 arcs where the story takes place after one hundred-year war when mankind has migrated into space colonies. War in the earth is over but suddenly a new and unknown enemy appeared who are advanced in a generation. The series consists of 49 TV episodes and 2 OVA in 2013

Gundam Build Fighters (2013-2014)

This story takes place after the story of Model Suit Gunpla Builders Beginning G (2010). Here, Gunpla is popular and more advanced. A boy tries to win the Gunpla battle tournament where he is honed with good assembling skill but poor piloting skills until he meets someone who is a skilled pilot. The Tv series consists of 25 Episodes and in 2014 there were 2 OVAs.

Mobile Suit Gundam-san (2014)

Based on a Manga (Mobile Suit Gundam-san). Basically, it is a Gag anime based on the main event of the Mobile Suit Gundam (1985-1986). While its predecessor was darker it took events to a comedic view. New side stories and plots are shown in these series. 13 episodes made it fun to watch.

Gundam Reconguista in G (2014-2015)

Humans marked the Regild Century as the colonization of space and where warfare moved on. The forwarding of humans has reached a new era of global peace. Someone known as the G-Self-a trains a pilot to maneuver Mobile Suit, operable only by a few who are selected by itself. 26 TV series episodes and 5 compilation movies in 2019 and the studio has a plan for an upcoming movie too.

Gundam Build Fighters Try (2014-2015)

Connected to the previous two gunpla series Model Suit Gunpla Builders Beginning G (2010) and Gundam Build Fighters (2013-2014) This story has taken the Gunpla battle to next level, with new rules and tactics. This is a story about a gunpla battle tournament of middle schoolers. Who would do anything to win the tournaments? 25 episodes and 1 OVA in 2016 made this series fun for everyone since it’s a bit less dark than the previous series.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans (2015-2017)

Story goes to the post war disaster settings where Earth has lost its old governing system and a new power has risen to govern earth on its own. But temporary peace is going to end when the seed of war is planted on Mars. That is when our protagonist was tasked to escort a girl to Martian city to liberate it from a major power of the earth. The story consists of 2 Seasons and 50 episodes.

SD Gundam World Heroes (2021)

Related to SD Gundam World Sangoku Soketsuden (2019-2021) tells the story of classic Chinese odyssey, where an amnesiac youth named Wukong an Impulse Gundam, Zhuge Liang a Freedom Gundam, and Liu Bei a Unicorn Gundam starts their journey together to solve the crisis that is running around the world. There have been 24 episodes so far and the 25th episode was released on 23rd of September 2021.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury (2022)

Set to release in 2022, Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury is set to be the most unique series ever since Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans(2015-2017) anime. Which is hoped to be aired in fall 2022. Nothing more is known about it.

Movie

Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack (1988)

The movie Char’s Counterattack shows the dramatic finale of the original saga that begins with Mobile Suit Gundam (1979-1980) and continued through Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (1985-1986) and Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ (1986-1987), respectively. This is a story of love, friendship, betrayal, and finally, the end of an old rivalry. Memorable characters and nostalgic connection between the old series made this movie worth watching.

Mobile Suit Gundam F91 (1991)

No peace is everlasting. After long-lasting peace, an all-out war between two organizations is taking place in all of Earth’s space colonies. As the Earth Federation Colony becomes a battlefield, Arno becomes a pilot of a New Gundam Mech, which is known as F91 as a codename created by his mother, to save his family and friends. Now Arno must chase his destiny and fulfill his duty.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team (1996-1999)

Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team story takes place during the one-year war of Mobile Suit Gundam (1979-1980). During the wartime two main factions, Zion and Earth Federation, are fighting a guerrilla war to take control of the jungle of Southeast Asia. Where Siro, a skilled and newly assigned commander of the 08Th MS team, finds out something, a plot he could never imagine. This series consists of 12 OVA episodes and 1 Compilation Movie released in 1998 and a special in 2013.

Gundam: Mission to the Rise (1998)

A short film about the Earth Federation making a craft that is faster than light, but Zeon’s interval makes things go different ways from the plan. The station is attacked to destroy the craft. Earth federation deploys two Gundam to defend the station, a fierce battle begins, meanwhile the craft is launched and another craft is launched by Zion too. And, the story continues this way.

G-Savior (Live Action: 2000)

Earth federation is gone and the space colonies have become space settlements. Two new powers have risen: The Congress of Settlement Nation (CONSENT) and the Settlement Freedom league. Various social crises like overpopulation and food shortages have caused instability in the Earth Sphere CONSENT has to overcome these problems to survive, but on the other hand Settlement, freedom league can manage on their own. When agricultural breakthroughs are made by scientists a new war starts to take place. Turns out CONSENT is an Illuminati trying to control world peace.

Gundam Neo Experience 0087: Green Diver (2001)

During the ending of the wars shown in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (1985-1986), two siblings are caught in the war between Titan’s and AEGU trying to make their way to earth by civil transport. But, they are not alone. A custom-painted Gundam and its unknown pilot help them to their epic adventure. The pilot’s voice sounds like the protagonist of the main Franchise Amuro Roy.

Mobile Suit Gundam 00 (2007-2009)

The series is set on Earth where the three organizations are in power. Humankind is dependent on solar energy generators. Amid this situation, there is a group that found out themselves as the celestial being. As the Celestial Being and its efforts to rid the world of war are shown, Gundam is shown as an extremely powerful weapon. 50 episodes and 3 OVAs in 2009 were released.

Mobile Suit Gundam 00 the Movie: A Wakening of the Trailblazer (2010)

After the events of Mobile Suit Gundam 00 (2007-2009) the world is at peace. Thanks to the sacrifices of Celestial Being and its mobile suit pilots, Earth experienced a time of prosperity and unity, lives once thought impossible. Celestial Being, an organization that was thought of as a villain for a long time by the Earth Sphere Federation, is now loved by the public as the hero, celebrated in film and culture. However, a new threat arrived and events started to roll in motion.

Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt (2015-2017)

This story has 2 seasons.Both seasons show different stories but are highly connected. Season 1 shows the story of the one-year war while season 2 shows the story after the war and a new war starts to break out in a war scattered area among 3 powers. There are 8 ONA Episodes and 2 compilation movies in 2016-2017 were released.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Twilight AXIS (2017)

Related to the story of Mobile Suit Gundam: Unicorn (2010-2014). This story’s plot is a bit complex and different from others. The story goes as the Earth Federation ordered a special force to enter and investigate part of the shattered asteroid Axis, which is drifting around Earth Sphere. The special force includes two civilians named Arlette Almage and Danton Hyleg, who were engineers and test pilots with the Principality of Zeon and Neo Zeon in their past. While investigating they came across a hostile and new model of Mysterious Gundam. Nowhere to run they have to fight for their lives and the plot blooms with 6 ONA episodes and 1 compilation movie.

Gundam Build Fighters: GM’s Counterattack (2017)

During the ceremony of a gunpla tournament. The stadium is sealed by some unknown organization. And they came to challenge everyone in the Gunpla battle. While other challengers are stuck in the stadium, there is no way to not accept the challenge. 1 ONA Episode shows how unity can be a strength.

Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative (2018)

Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative is an anime film that takes place a year after the events of Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn (2010-2013). A vast plot is relevelled cantering Neo Zeon remnant, a group from the previous series. Out of nowhere a missing powerful Gundam model suddenly appears in Earth’s orbit. The story moves forward with plots and twists.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan’s Island (2022)

A side story based on the 15th episodes of Original Mobile suit Gundam this move takes place in Doan’s Island. When a distress signal beckoned in a small island in the Pacific, Amuro was bound to dispatch with the Core Fighter to investigate the source and find out who or why sent it.

That’s all that has been released on Gundam Series but at the 2018 Anime Expo, Legendary Pictures and Sunrise announced a collaboration to develop a live-action Gundam film. April 2021, it was reported that the project had landed at Netflix and that Jordan Vogt-Roberts had been hired to direct.

Gundam Build Real (Live action net Drama: 2021)

Since 1980 Gunpla battles popularity has reached its peak. Now, a game held by ESports is the new craze. “Gundam Model Battle,”a robot fighting game where participants take control of their visually scanned Gunpla and join the tournaments. This Japanese live-action web series is uploaded on the official Gundam Channel on YouTube. As it is released monthly since March 2021 consist of 6 episodes and upcoming more episodes.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway (Movie: 2021)

Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway is a sequel film that takes place twelve years after the events of Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack(1988). A new pilot takes vows to fulfill the unfinished work of Char from the main series. Full of plotting and complexity this one has a good review among the fans.

OVAs

Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket (1989)

A side story of the main franchise of Mobile Suit Gundam (1979-1980) was released as the ten-year anniversary of the main franchise. It is considered as an OVA with 6 episodes. The story continues as the Cyclops Team which is an elite Zeon MS commando team is dispatched to destroy a prototype. But the prototype has already been dispatched, located in an arctic colony. Now, the MS commando team has to take it down secretly, but will they succeed? To know the rest, it is a must-watch series.

Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory (1991-1992)

This 13-episode OVA takes place before the birth of Titan from Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (1985-1986). The organization Zeon, which is introduced to us from the beginning of the franchise as an opposing force, finds out about a Gundam Carrying nuclear missiles and they launch their own suits to prevent it. But it turns out Zeon had other plans in their mind after capturing the suit. Thirteen episodes and a 1992 movie make this series worth watching for mech lovers.

Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz (1997-1998)

After finding peace and ending the war between earth and the colonies all Gundam Mech are sent to the sun but the peace doesn’t last long and a new event unfolds itself before the suits reach the sun. A former rival now lends his hand to help the protagonist to acquire his Gundam from reaching the sun and joins the battle for peace. 3 OVA episodes and a Movie completed the story wonderfully.

Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO: The Hidden One Year War (2004)

The two organizations from the franchise’s first series are at war (the Earth Federation & Zeon). A civilian ship is now transformed into a military test craft and has been ordered to try out different armament prototypes to be used for the war against the Federation by Zeon in this 3-episode OVA.

Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO: Apocalypse 0079 (2006)

A three-episode OVA is the part two of the Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO series, from 2006 tells the story after the events of the Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO series and the things that comes after.

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED C.E. 73: Stargazer (2006)

Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO 2: Gravity Front (2009)

This story goes back to the events of Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO: Apocalypse 0079 (2006). When most of Zeon and the Earth Federation are fighting each other, a Mobile Suit Gundam Codename MS IGLOO will focus on the Earth Federation’s point of interest. This series consists of 3 OVA episodes.

Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn (2010-2014)

This series takes place at the very beginning of human space colonization, which is situated on earth’s orbit. When the Earth federation residential space station was destroyed by an anti-organization during an event that’s when the story begins. The main story takes place 16 years after the end of the One-year War, 3 years after the events of Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack (1988), and 27 years before Mobile Suit Gundam F91(1991).

Model Suit Gunpla Builders Beginning G (2010)

Making a Gunpla which is a plastic model of Gundam. And joining a virtual tournament where you have to rely on your friends as well as your own technique and experiences to become victorious. Our protagonist starts his journey as a builder and participates in the virtual tournament. This series is basically a 3 Episodes OVA.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin (2015-2018)

A 6-episode OVA tells the story of the first battle of a one-year war and the origin story of Zeon, an organization from the first series of the franchise. It’s an anime adaptation of the manga of same name. Later in 2019, a Tv series consisting of 13 episodes was released to complete the story.

Gundam Build Fighters: Battlogue (2017)

This story consists of 5 ONA Episodes about gunplas fighting and overcoming all sorts of situations. Now Gunpla Battle has become more and more interesting as many new kinds of gunpla have been developed and introduced to entertain the arena. Simple story with very good visual effects.

Gundam Build Divers (2018)

This series comes with an isekai anime vibe. As the popularity of Gunpla battle rose higher, a virtual reality game was developed named Gunpla Battle Nexus Online (GBN). A lot of different types of missions are enjoyed in a VR world, using Gunpla developing their skills and new models have been evolved to participate in a virtual cyberspace dimension. There are 3 middle schoolers who join the game as a team and go on an epic journey to explore the GBN. 25 TV episodes and 1 prologue ONA made it worth watching.

Gundam Build Divers: Battlogue (2020)

Since it’s the anniversary of GBN a one-day gunpla battle royale was held and the participants are the drivers who enjoyed the game most passionately are given a chance in this game. Last one standing will be declared as the winner. 20 Min 1 Episode ONA is a fast-paced interesting story.

Gundam Breaker Battlogue (2021)

Misa Satsukino, a Gunpla builder trying to build a new GUNPLA in the Ayato Shopping Street, running in a bad mood than usual enters the Gunpla battle simulator to let off steam. Because of the anger as she let go of her focus her Gunpla restrains, A new figure appears in front of her. ONA of 6 Episodes make this fun to watch.

Gundam Evolve (2001-2007)

Completely different settings and different plots in different time, 15 episodes were shortly animated. Each story possesses unique types of story and ending that will touch the heart of the viewers.

Net Animation

SD Gundam World Sangoku Soketsuden (2019-2021)

Story takes place eight years after SD Gundam Sangokuden Brave Battle Warriors (2010) where new Gundam models are introduced based on the three-kingdom era. After meeting through a series of events, Liu Bei Unicorn Gundam gets mixed with Guan Yu Nu Gundam and Zhang Fei God Gundam, and focuses on saving the world and restoring peace in this ONA 10 Episodes.

Gundam Build Divers Re:Rise (2019-2020)

2 years after the story of Gundam Build Divers (2018), this time Gunpla Battle Nexus Online (GBN) game moved to another level of advancement. Now, more realistic and more advanced virtual battles are introduced in GBN. Four pilots of different personality and traits become friends and take part in this new and advanced version of GBN . 26 ONA episodes are released.

Gundam Series Chronological Order

To enjoy and understand the story of the Gundam series a fan doesn’t have to watch every single released series according to the years of release. The Gundam series has come a long way but watching the listed series is needed to understand the story. They might not be sequels according to the release year but the story line goes in this straight line according to the list.
