Another day, another anime! I’m pretty sure we all know what a dragon is, but for those who don’t, it is a  mythical reptile-like monster that can be found in the mythology of several civilizations all over the world. Dragons are pretty common in anime, these mythical creatures that are portrayed as wise, strong, and extremely rich but they are rarely the main character. They are often a side character–- which is weird. How can such a great creature not be the star of the show? But do not worry because here are 12 anime where the MC is a dragon.

We have a lazy dragon on the list, Chong Shim threw herself into the sea of Indangsu. Technically speaking though she is being sacrificed to the dragon king. But the former dragon king was killed by another dragon.  Another warm, light hearted story filled with a lazy dragon and a chef. Even if it lacks the action like in most dragon stories. you’ll be filled with laughter as you progress deeper in the story.

The story revolves around Elonora Asil, a witch and a villainess in a novel, but there’s a twist! Elonora  actually got  reincarnated was formerly known as Noa but died  due to overworking. ( I swear this isn’t a reincarnation recommendation list T_T)  She knows how the novel ends and how she will die. So she leaves her previous lifestyle, and decides to live in the quiet countryside where she stumbles upon the heroine’s pet dragon. 

The little dragon imprints her as its mother (the dragon is pretty obsessive, weird and takes the form of a cute kid) The dragon still has room to grow and as the story progresses so does the dragon .

But don’t worry, the dragon is pretty strong considering it is one of the vital characters in the novel. Also it’s a must read considering how cute the dragon is >_<.

Our story starts off sad since our MC Ichiru Futaba was just an ordinary office lady working with constant stress until one day her dog starts acting strange, then eventually dies. Due to her dog’s death, she collapses on the floor and gets reincarnated as a priestess/ healer where she is protected by a dragon knight as the title states.

This story may not focus entirely on the dragon knight but it’s a story full of hope as our MC saves everyone with her powers. This story might give you the feeling that this is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. A dragon romance just hits differently.

Dragons are typically carnivorous, but in this story, they have a vegan dragon that has lived for over 5000 years. I guess we can say those vegetables really helped extend its life, but jokes aside, the story is about how the vegan dragon lives peacefully until a girl sacrifices herself for the dragon to gain favor for her village but sadly it did not go according to plan since the dragon is vegan.

The dragon tells a white lie in order to get rid of the girl saying he is the great “Jaryuu-Sama, the Demon Lord’s Army Leader” but sadly, his lie awakens the girl’s hidden powers ending his peaceful life.

Another reincarnation manga, so our MC starts off weird since the majority of reincarnated MC’s get cool powers and skill immediately but this one doesn’t. He actually started as a dragon egg. His journey starts off with him in an egg as he runs for his life from a dark worm T_T.  He defeats the worm and successfully hatches into a baby dragon.

As the story grows, so does the MC. This is a must read since it’s filled with humor and is not short of the fantasy action that we all want. It also does not fall short on the art style and plot since it’s pretty original, one of the few mangas that actually has a dragon MC

Dragons are mighty creature filled with wisdom and treasure in Shingeki no Bahamut: Virgin Soul, the dragon here isn’t typical. Our MC, Nina Drango, is a bounty hunter under the guidance of Leone Favaro. She is also a dragon folk but there’s a catch. She can’t turn into a dragon naturally. Nina can only transform when she’s near a handsome guy making her heart beat rapidly. Weird right? When she goes to the capitol her chances of turning into a dragon skyrocket since handsome young men are everywhere.

Good thing she has it under wraps that is until she meets a young man named Chris who is also Charioce XVII, the sole king of the humans. Nina falls in love with Chris, and vice versa. Though the story sounds cute and romantic, there is actually more to it. This series did not fully highlight Nina’s dragon feature, but it is satisfying to watch, knowing it ends well and the majority of the characters are happy despite the tragedy that they faced.

Out of the 4 main characters, we will only be focusing on the dragon member of the squad which is Iris. One of the strongest and oldest dragons alive, Iris might seem harmless considering she is mostly seen in her human form. A young girl with red hair and eyes, despite her innocent appearance she is also known as “Black Dragon Iris”. 

In her dragon form she appears as a black dragon and she does not fall short in Magic skills and has monstrous strength in dragon and human form. 

She is also the strongest of all dragons, the story gives her justice since her strengths and her ability as a dragon is shown well, so it’s a must read if you want to see a group of mages and a dragon through their journey.

Revenge story anyone? Killing a dragon is a great feat but this story shows us the point of view of a dragon’s loved one. Ignis is the sibling of the Dragon of Destruction that was killed by a strong guild. Because of this, Ignis wants to seek revenge for his brother’s death. 

This story is filled with action adventure and fantasy perfect for people who seek to see the process of Ignis’ revenge. Ignis is also a Dragon of Destruction since she is related to one. A strong dragon filled with revenge, different from common justice powered MC that we usually see. 

 

4. Ruri Dragon

Finally a dragon we can relate to! Ruri is a half dragon who has horns and can breathe fire like a dragon but on her other half she’s your typical lazy student trying her best to get through life. Pretty relatable for a dragon.

This manga follows her journey in discovering that she is half dragon. It starts with her growing horns, breathing fire and so much more. This manga is still ongoing but the few released chapters already show great potential as a slice of life manga. 

 

3. Goodbye, Dragon Life

Technically, the MC is not a dragon but he is a former dragon. He was an ancient dragon that lived among the gods which is amazing considering his powers could be equal to the gods. He lived through time but sadly he got killed by a human hero and as he was preparing for eternal sleep he realized he got reincarnated into a human which is ironic.

It’s safe to assume he allowed himself to get slain considering he is one of the strongest and oldest dragons who has lived through eternity only to be reborn as a human named Dran.

Dran is quite a boring villager but by being human he experienced joy and warmth inlife. Something  he never experienced as a dragon. Until one day when he was patrolling in the woods he encountered a pretty powerful demon army.

That encounter is the starting point of his journey as Dran and not as a dragon. Even if the MC sounded boring in this one, it gets pretty interesting as the story unravels considering it starts off as a dragon turned into a normal guy. 

 

2. Dragon Next Door

As the title suggests, the story is about Wook-Hyuk Choi and his neighbor, a dragon named Dragon Kim(T_T). Wook is also a fantasy novelist and your typical shut-in gamer.

The story is filled with nonsense but if you’re in for a good laugh then this comic is for you. The more you read, the messier it gets but in a good funny way. Though it’s not your typical modern fantasy, it certainly does meet the criteria for fantasy in modern 😀

Maid dragon? Cute? Wholesome???? Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon has it all. Our story revolves around Kobayashi, a stoic programmer who lives her day-to -day life as an average working Japanese citizen until one drunken night she  stumbles upon a dragon out of nowhere(PS. It was on a mountain. IDK how she climbed a mountain when she’s drunk, that’s amazing) thus her fate changed drastically now that she has a dragon maid companion.

I’m pretty amazed how the creators of this manga made  a fierce mythical creature so warm and light hearted. The plot isn’t as intense as typical dragon anime but this one will surely leave you a nice feeling and a good laugh.

 

Conclusion

The long list we have made is proof to the fact that dragons are not only wild and wise creatures, but also creatures full of variety and surprises. Among all the dragons that are presented in this list, it would be fair to say that toothless is the best dragon among all. And speaking of Dragon, why not check Dragon Ball content that we have xD.
