Every Jojo fan is familiar with the OG Jonathan Joestar. He is one of the best Jojos out there. But some of you would definitely argue with it. The thing is that he’s not everyone’s favorite. Maybe because he’s not as badass as other Jojos. However, his mannerism, gentlemanliness, and self-righteousness is what makes him the BEST BOY EVER.
It’s so sad that we didn’t get to see Jonathan a lot throughout the series. We got to see him for only 9 episodes. There should’ve been more of him but oh well. He died a tragic death and so soon.
Now, some people believe that Jonathan got reincarnated as Star Platinum. Are you all familiar with Star Platinum? He’s the stand of Jotaro Cujoh, the great great grandson of Jonathan Joestar. Today, we will be discussing the theory that is extremely popular among the fans of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. Is Star Platinum really the reincarnation of Jonathan Joestar? Let’s find out more about it!
About Jonathan Joestar and Star Platinum
Jonathan Joestar is the main protagonist of the first part of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. He was introduced as the son of a wealthy businessman named George Joestar. He was shown to be a very kind, gentle and positive man. His life became a mess when he got involved with his adopted brother, Dio. To fight off Dio, Jonathan becomes a Ripple User.
He was able to weaken Dio and just when he thought he had gotten rid of him, Dio returned and ended Jonathan’s life in a tragic incident. It was unbelievable for us when we saw Jonathan’s demise. All of us were under the impression that everything had returned to normal when Jonathan was finally leaving on a ship with Erina. But Dio was there again to ruin Jonathan’s life and he actually succeeded in doing that. Jonathan’s name will be mentioned in almost every part of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure and his legacy will continue till the 6th part. Jonathan is a very vital part of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, even after his death.
Star Platinum is the Stand of Jotaro Cujoh, the great great grandson of Jonathan Joestar. Now, stands are actually the fighting spirits of their owners. They are similar to the Ripples (Hamon) that were introduced to us in the first two parts. Jotaro’s fighting spirit, Star Platinum, is a quiet but violent spirit. He’s stoic, calm but always alert. He resembles Jotaro a lot and is extremely powerful. How can we not talk about the iconic “ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA” when we’re talking about Star Platinum?
Similarities Between Jonathan Joestar and Star Platinum
Now, some of you must be wondering if it’s even possible for Jonathan to be reincarnated as a ghost (stand)? Remember, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure is the kind of anime where everything bizarre happens. We saw ancient pillar men waking up after thousands of years, we saw vampires, we saw strange creatures called stands. So, reincarnation is definitely possible in this anime. Let’s talk about some of the similarities between Jonathan Joestar and Star Platinum that the fans pointed out.
Appearance
If we look at both side by side, they’re muscular and tall. If we look closely, we’ll notice that both of them are wearing gloves with golden studs or rivets on them. Both Jonathan Joestar and Star Platinum are wearing shoulder pads but they look quite different from each other. Both of them have blueish clothes and theme. These are some of the similarities in their appearances that convinces us that Star Platinum is actually a reincarnation of Jonathan Joestar.
Fighting Style
We’ve seen Jonathan Joestar using mainly his strong fists in order to beat the enemy. Star Platinum uses the same style and his iconic “ora ora ora” punches in a very similar way. Have you heard Jonathan saying “Ora” well punching as well? Because we sure have heard him saying that. This doesn’t really seem like a coincidence.
Hints in the Anime
Now this one is interesting. There are a few hints that make us think that Star Platinum actually is Jonathan Joestar. There’s this scene where we can see Jonathan telling Dio that his ghost will haunt Dio forever.
It is said that when Dio awakened again using the body of Jonathan Joestar, Jonathan’s spirit decided to become the stand of Jotaro Cujoh, who was most capable of defeating Dio. It was probably Jonathan’s way of helping his bloodline get rid of Dio, their sworn enemy.
Both Joseph and Holly’s stands are quite different from that of Jotaro. Jotaro’s stand is a humanoid, while both Joseph’s and Holly’s stands are not in any humanoid form. This explains how Jonathan could be Jotaro’s stand, Star Platinum.
Some Objections Behind this theory
This theory that Jonathan Joestar is actually Star Platinum makes a lot of sense. However, there are some counter-arguments as well that make this theory seem weak.
First of all, reincarnation is not confirmed in this anime in any way. There sure are multiple afterlives in this anime but there are no signs of reincarnation.
Secondly, the stands that look like spirits are not actual spirits. They’re just one’s fighting spirits that come out of their willpower.
If we talk about both Jonathan’s and Star Platinum’s personalities, they’re very different from each other. Jonathan is very kind and gentle. On the other hand, Star Platinum is rude and crude, just like Jotaro Cujoh, his user. Jonathan would never punch a woman no matter what. However, Jotaro did and didn’t even hesitate while doing that.
All of that makes us wonder if Jonathan Joestar really is Platinum End? There’s actually no answer to it. Only Araki can answer this question and we hope that he does soon!
