Video games are known for having a lot of amazing features to add more entertainment for gamers as they play. Like puzzles, mysteries to solve, mazes, and quests. But there is one feature that I know that most gamers want to have in a game, and that is character customization.

In character creation, gamers can either modify default characters in the game or create one from scratch. This includes body modification, status modification, and skill modification for the Roleplaying Game types. There are games where you can and cannot choose the gender of your character.

There are fighting games that also allow gamers to modify the default characters to make them unique or personalized for the gamers using them. Now let’s go through a list of games that have a character creation or customization feature.

Tekken is one of the most famous 3D fighting games ever made and in Tekken 5 developers gave gamers the opportunity to customize their favorite fighter up to the current Tekken release.

Character customization for this game is a bit straightforward, gamers can choose from the available items in the game. More items are waiting to be unlocked as the gamers progress in the game by collecting points or buying using in-game currency. Another game similar to this is the famous Dead or Alive having similar method of customization but unlike Tekken, most players of DOA customize the female characters since that is what the game is famous for.

Here is another fighting game where gamers can modify their favorite character. They can personalize the appearance of their fighter by choosing from the variety of in-game items that are readily available and unlockable as the gamers progress through the game.

Gamers can change hairstyles, mix accessories, and change the costumes of their fighters. Locked items can be bought by use of accumulated in-game points and by finishing the story mode of each player in the game. The game is famous for its cute female character designs, but when it comes to customizing characters, the male characters do not fall short in the options as well.

Diablo Resurrection is the remake and remastered version of the classic Diablo II2 Lord of Destruction that gives players the option to choose their character before starting the game. The characters are sadly gender locked but gamers can modify the characters by freely distributing status points and skill points after each level up. Gamers can also personalize their characters as they buy or find armor in the game since the armor worn is visible, unlike other games where the armors that look cool are not even visible in the game.

In Diablo Immortal, gamers can now select the gender of their chosen character. The game also gives gamers three sets of premade heads for each character and gender for them to choose from, adding more to the character creation process. The distribution of stat and skill points is still the same in the game.

So far these are the classes available in the remake of the Diablo Lord of Destruction called Resurrected: Necromancer (male), Barbarian (male), Paladin (male), Assassin (female), Amazon (female), and a sorceress (female).

The character creation for this game allows gamers to choose the gender of their character but the modification ends with the head features. One of the redeeming parts of this is that there are several selections for the head modification from serious to comical face. But still, they could have given a bit more from the neck down. 

This game also gives players access to customize the appearance of Palico, the cat-like companion in the game. For the pet lovers, they might enjoy this one since players can change a lot with these guys. Fur color, stripes, eyes, length of the tail, and those cute ears. I guess even those who have no pets might like this feature since it will challenge another part of their creative minds.

Here is another game that has a lot of options for character creation but is limited at the head only. The options for the head modification are vast, almost to the point that a gamer can make the character look like someone they know or exactly like them. The graphics for the game makes the characters look like real people and that is a plus for those who want to see life-like graphics.

Gender can be selected and the modification for the head varies from hairstyle, & color, skin tone, facial appearance, facial hair, eye color, scars and tattoos for the most part which makes it interesting until you realize you cannot change the body build.

The redeeming factor that I see here is that the game allows players to customize their character along the game, from distributing the status points to choosing the weapon that they want to use. Another feature here is that each weapon being used accumulates skill experience only for that weapon and cannot be shared with another weapon. Meaning the player can concentrate with only one weapon skill set that they wish to master, if they use another weapon they will start from scratch and gather new experience points for that new weapon.

This game has one of the simplest character creations in a game. Similar to Diablo, this game gives gamers four-character classes to choose from and each class has the option to choose a gender. The four-character classes are; Engineer, Outlander, Berserker, and Embermage. After choosing a class, the player can choose the gender of their character and a pet as a companion in the mission 

As the game progresses, gamers can distribute status and skill points for their character as well as use the weapons and armors to fully customize the look of their character as well as the pet that they have. I forgot to mention, gamers have a number of pets to choose from, and those pets can fight alongside you as well as carry excess items, or you can organize the inventory between your character and the pet.

The game starts off with players choosing the gender for their characters and changing the appearance of the head. They can change their hairstyle, hair color, eye color, and eye shape; clothing of the characters can be changed later on in the game.

The players start off with the appearance of the Novice Job Class which is the starting point of all characters after the character creation. Players will then grind to achieve the required base and job level which is needed for a job change or remain as a novice and become a super novice. Each Job Class has their own default appearance or clothing and the colors can be changed once players have a dye to use.

For further customization of the character, players can freely distribute base level points and job level points. Base points can be used to modify the status of the character and the job points can be distributed to choose which skill sets the player wants to use. Since players cannot change the body build of their character, they can modify the status and skill sets of their character to make it unique as much as possible.

An anime fighting game where players can create their own avatar. Choosing a gender and one of three fighter body types, each with their own fighting style.  After choosing the gender and body type, players can now customize the appearance of their fighter.

In the next section, players can customize the body height, mass, muscle tone, and skin color. The hair and other facial features can be modified by using a number of varieties and combinations that a player can choose from. Eye color can also be changed but not just simply changing it, this game allows players to make eye color different from the other eye which some anime characters are known to have, making them look intense or sharp.

The voice can also be customized by choosing from the selection of voices provided by the game. Not all games with character creation have voice options.

The game has a rather interesting character creation process. In each character class, there are three avatars to choose from. But those avatars are male and female forms, and the third one is a young girl. For some reason, they don’t have an avatar for a young boy.

There are also different classes to choose from, but for starters, you can only choose from Blade Master, Gunslinger, Assassin, and Soul Dancer. In order to unlock Floramancer, Reaper, Puppeteer, Phantom Sound, Skateboarder, Fighter, and Illusionist, players will have to grind in the game to reach the required levels of each class to unlock them.

A slider bar is available to adjust certain parts of the character to make it more unique. With limitless options for character creation, if you are a player who takes their time in creating their character, then this game might be for you.

In this game, players can create their character’s gender and almost every other detail of their character. Unlike most games, players can adjust the contours of their avatar’s body however they want. Making the avatar slim, chubby, or however, they want. The details in the game are also incredible. An online multiplayer game that allows players to fully recreate the default characters of the game. So far, this is the only game that I’ve had where players have free reign on how they want to customize their avatars down to every detail of the character. We can say that they made a character from scratch with this game.

Head, face, eyes, nose, lips, hair, body structure, gender, vital stats, almost everything a player wishes to do to make their avatar unique in the game seems possible in Black Desert. That is a lot of details to customize.

Soul Calibur is known for having more creatures in the game other than humans. Character creation for this game seemed simple at first glance since the primary options for creating a character will start with the name, gender, appearance, skin color, and choosing the voice of the character. After that part, players can proceed to modify their characters on how they wish them to appear in the game.

Adjusting certain parts for the character creation can be done by choosing from premade templates, or if there are slide bars available, players can use it to make their needed adjustments for the appearance of their character. They can modify almost every bit of the character or they can just choose from the readymade templates. This also includes the clothes to be worn.

Not only does this game allow character design,  it  also gives players the option to choose the weapon of their choice for the character. Players can also choose from a set of abilities, a character title, and military rank or specialty. There is also a random button at the very bottom of the list for character creation, the special button for players who do not want to spend too much time making their character.

One of the games under the Final Fantasy Franchise known for having a wide range of characters and I mean wide range of characters. This game has allowed players to create their avatar from choosing the race or clan and from there they can choose the gender (there are races, for now, are gender locked).

Character modification can be accessed once players have chosen the race that they like. The character creation seemed simple but players can change a lot for their character from character height, body build (for muscle appearance), hairstyle, skin and hair color.

Considering this game has about 8 races to choose from and to customize, this gives players a lot to work with in making their own character for the game. The customization does not stop in the creation section, the game has more customization items as part of rewards or loot that players can get in various events and missions giving players more options to choose from.

Eve Online is another game with a ton of character customization options.  Players choose from a set of couples, then choose between the genders of the characters. When it comes to modifying the character’s physical appearance, that is another level as well. Star Trek Online gives a wide range of options for character creation. The game gives the player the option to choose from a number of species that appeared in the Star Trek storyline. For each alien species, or race the player has a huge number of options to choose from in creating their in-game character from physical appearance, body build, and clothing. Now I see why this game is so huge. I thought it was only because it was designed as an open world or open universe.

Not only can players choose their appearance, but they can customize the color of the clothes, add extra accessories, although those accessories will have no special function except for the added looks and aesthetics for their taste. Players who want to fool around with creating a character will have a lot of fun with this game because of the wide array of options to choose from.

Some games have a drop-down menu where each type of model parts are listed, as players glide through those parts it is being shown on their character showing them what it looks like. Another is the slide bar similar to drop down menu boxes, the slide bar uses the cursor keys or the mouse to use the slider to see the changes on the appearance of the character.

Color palettes also vary; some games have fixed colors and styles for eyes, hair, and skin tone while other games have various options to choose from.

For gamers who do not want to spend too much time modifying their creation, there are games that have the random button that gives a random character design which at most times looks amazing. Most of all the character creation’s true limit is the creativity and imagination of the gamer.
