Do you know what’s the most common weapon used to fight in most anime? It’s a sword! While many swords in the anime are simple and serve their purpose normally, a few of them are given unique powers. When paired with their users, these swords end up making them truly overpowered. 

Today, we’re going to deal with a highly anticipated and interesting topic. We’re serving you with anime where the main character is an overpowered swordsman. I bet you’re already thinking of a few by now. So, without further ado, let’s start our blog!

Katanagatari is all about swords as the name suggests. It opens in the Edo era in Japan. You guys know how sword fighting was so common at that time. We’re introduced to Togame Hida, an army personnel, who wishes to gather all the 12 “Deviant Blades”.

She travels to an island in order to search for Yasuri Mutsune who was the hero of the rebellion. However, it is revealed that he passed away. He left his son, Shichika, behind. He has the skills of his father. However, he’s a little dumb. The two set out on a journey to find the blades and to make Shichika a proper swordsman.

 

16. Claymore

Claymore has a very strong female character with great swordsmanship. The story opens in a village where creatures named “Youma” started appearing. To combat them, a woman who’s half-human and half-youma comes forward. She has nothing but a sword. She’s known as a “Claymore”.

Raki loses his family to a youma and is saved by Clare, the Claymore. He decides to accompany Clare on her journey. However, Clare is looking for a specific youma that made her hungry for revenge and is the sole reason why she became a Claymore in the first place.

Record of Grancrest War introduces us to Atlantan where everybody fears chaos. Now, the Lords that are protecting the people with the power of “Crests” turn against each other and abandon the heroic ideals they once had. They start stealing each others’ Crests.

We’re introduced to Siluca, a mage, who absolutely despises the Lords. She comes across Theo, a righteous knight who wishes to free his land of the corrupted Lords. Both Siluca and Theo join forces in order to put an end to the war.

House of Five Leaves tells us the story of Masanosuke who came to the city of Edo in order to become a reputable warrior. However, he failed to do so because of his lack of confidence. Now, he’s left penniless with nothing to eat.

One day, a strange man wearing a pink Kimono offers to be his bodyguard. Masanosuke happily takes up his offer. However, he had no idea that his new boss was the leader of the House of Leaves, a band of kidnappers. Will he join the band and do various crimes in order to make a living?

 

13. Gangsta

This anime opens in Ergastulum, a city corrupted with every kind of dirty deed. There are two men named Nicand Worick who take care of the things that nobody else can.

One day, they get a request from a cop to stop a new gang that has infiltrated the city. Initially, they’re chill about it. However, this job is somewhat different from all the other ones they’ve done before.

Burning Eyed Shana introduces us to a normal high school student named Sakai Yuuji. One day, the clock stopped ticking. It seemed like time had stopped. Everyone around Yuuji was frozen.

He came across a monster who was eating all the frozen people around him. He was about to be devoured by the monster as well but is saved by a red haired girl named Shana. She reveals to him that he had been dead for a while now. He can only exist until the blue flame in his chest stops burning. 

 

11. God Eater

God Eater opens in the future in 2050 where the “Oracle Cells” start devouring the Earth. There’s no technology that can combat them and put an end to them. However, the wielder of the “God Arcs” are there to try their luck.

The God Arcs are arsenals made by incorporating Oracle Cells in weapons. The users of God Arcs are the only hope left for the survival of humanity.

 

10. Afro Samurai

Afro Samurai is a pretty famous anime with an op mc wielding a sword. It opens in the future where swordsmen are in abundance. There is a rule that the no. 1 swordsman is the ruler of everyone. The only one who could challenge him is the no. 2 swordsman. 

Enter Afro. He’s the son of the former no. 1 swordsman who got killed by a gunman that  also took his position. Afro is all up for revenge and wants to challenge the one that killed his father.

But he can only do that if he becomes the no. 2 swordsman. Now, Afro must climb his way up to become the no. 2 swordsman to take revenge against the murderer of his father.

 

9. Sengoku Basara

The story opens in the Sengoku period where leaders are so power-hungry that they don’t even care if they’re shedding too much blood. Nobunaga Oda is the only one who has proven himself to be the strongest and most capable ruler. 

However, he wants to create a tyrannical rule. Masamune Date and Yukimura Sanada are the only ones who dare to challenge him. Though both of them have the same goal, they still can’t get along well.

Both of them are exceptionally skilled with the sword. They must work together in order to overthrow the tyrannical rule of Nobunaga Oda.

 

8. Inuyasha

Inuyasha is a true classic and fans still remember it today. We have Kogame, a high school girl who accidentally falls inside a well. Now, instead of dying or getting badly injured, she wakes up back in feudal Japan.

Fuu is a waitress at a teahouse who accidentally spills a drink on her customers. Furious, they start harassing her. That’s when Mugen saves her from the thugs. He also starts fighting with a ronin named Jin. Both of them completely destroy the shop and also end up killing the magistrate’s son. For this crime, both of them are going to be executed. 

However, Fuu saves them and makes both of them her bodyguards. She’s in search of a samurai who smells like sunflowers and for that, she needs both the samurai’s help. Their journey ahead is very long and strenuous but they must find out that samurai.

 

5. Black Clover

I must say, Asta is one of the most determined characters in the world of anime. His power is that he never gives up. He was born without magical powers in a world where it was abundant. He wanted to become the Wizard King and take the exam to start the process as a Magic Knight. 

However, he was not blessed with any Grimoire while all the others had it. It was only when his friend, Yuno, was attacked by some guy that Asta’s Grimoire was bestowed upon him, one that’s more unique than any other. Now, Asta is all set to travel to the Magic Kingdom in order to become the Wizard King.

 

4. Sword Art Online

Kirito is pretty op as a swordsman and no one can deny that. The story opens in 2022 where all the gamers are excited for the release of a new MMORPG, Sword Art Online. Kirito is one such gamer who’s all up for the beta testing of the game.

He, along with 10,000 other players, realize that they can’t log out of the game. That’s when he realizes that he’s actually inside the game. There’s no escape from it and they must survive and reach the last level as their death in Sword Art Online would mean their death in real life.

 

3. Fate/Zero

Saber is probably the strongest swordswoman out of all the swordswomen in the history of anime. This anime opens ten years before the meeting of Emiya and Saber. The fourth Holy Grail War is going to happen in Japan.

There are seven warriors who want the mystic relic. Emiya is one of the seven warriors and wants to restore peace in the world using it. Saber decides to help him. Will they be able to win against some of the strongest warriors of history.

 

2. Bleach

When his family gets attacked by a huge beast, he realizes that there are far more creatures present in the world that are slowly revealing themselves.

There are spirits named Hollows who are in search of souls to devour. The Shinigami are the ones who defeat Hollows and guide them to their right place. Ichigo became a Shinigami because of Rukia when he was on the verge of death. Now, he must adjust to his new life as a shinigami.

Guts is the best swordsman, at least for me. He has superhuman skills with the sword and his style is too dangerous. That’s why he can easily defeat anyone who threatens him and his friends. Guts had a tragic childhood and has mostly spent his days battling against others. 

One day, he meets Griffith and after losing a duel with him, Guts decides to join his Band of Hawks. He reluctantly befriends everyone and slowly grows closer to them. There are many challenges that are waiting for Guts and his friends. Will they be able to overcome them together?
