His sheer determination, strength, and physique makes him stand out easily from other anime characters. The name of our MC is Guts. And sure as hell, he has the guts to face the most dangerous situations.

The story of this anime depicts the beauty of struggle, betrayal, and swordsmanship. If you think that these things are of your taste, you better watch Berserk. Anyways, let’s talk a bit about its plot. The story of this anime revolves around Guts who’s a loner mercenary, raised by his father who adopted him. Guts was forced to kill his own father to defend himself. Sounds crazy already, right?

Anyways, since Guts was feared by everyone, Griffith got his eye on him. Now, if you haven’t watched Berserk, you must be wondering, who’s Griffith? Well, he’s the leader of the Band of the Falcons. Berserk (1997)

Berserk is the story of a fantastical dark age. The story tells us about the two nations that have been battling against one another for over a hundred years. The story begins with Guts being offered to join the Band of Falcons by the leader, Griffith. Since everyone feared Guts and Griffith liked having such a strong warrior by his side, he decided to make Guts join his band. Griffith dreams of taking over the world and becoming the King. That’s not the actual starting point tho, the beginning shows Guts fighting different monsters and how it feels to be in such a universe.

The world of Berserk is based on a dark-age or medieval world, where there’s no magic but weird creatures exist. Around halfway through the story, it turns out that Griffith has taken over the world and has become the King ultimately. That’s when everything turned wrong. When we all were expecting them to team up, one of them decided to betray the other. Now, what will Guts do? Will he just sit back and relax or will he step up for himself? He must be upset for being used by Griffith all this time. Trust me, Guts is a warrior and he doesn’t let his pride get stomped on.

Guts also finds out about Griffith’s mysterious pendant named Behelit which proved to be of great demise for him. Now, when Griffith became one of the nobles, he started to get greedy and had his eyes on Charlotte, who’s the King’s daughter. On the other hand, Guts started developing feelings for his fellow commander named Casca. She’s quite useful and strong.

Anyways, moving on, we see Griffith telling Charlotte that he considers anyone with the same dream as him, “his friend”. That’s how hard he was trying to get along with the King’s daughter. As the story proceeds, Guts gets disgusted by Griffith and decides to leave the Band of Falcons. However, Guts leaving the group and him seducing King’s daughter, causes Griffith a lot of damage.

He gets tortured. This time, Guts spends the next year practicing to become stronger and a better swordsman. He gets warned by an unknown “Skull Knight” who tells Guts that an eclipse happened because of him. All these circumstances make him rejoin the Band of Falcons while he’s still figuring out his feelings for Casca. Anyways, the true trouble begins when the Behelit of Griffith in a moment of despair leads the Hawks to a completely different dimension where they face or combat against archdemons. They are also known as “God’s Hand”. Griffith again tried to betray everyone for his own good and to become stronger. He decides to join the Archdemons and has to sacrifice all of the Falcon’s members.

When Griffith joins the God’s Hand, he turns really evil and is known as the “Femto”, the final member. Griffith hurts Casca real badly. On the other hand, Guts loses his arm in order to save Casca before they’re killed by the Skull Knight. Moving on, we get to see Casca traumatized by such an event, it leaves her in a child-like state.

Seeing the intensity of the situation, Guts decides to get a new arm, some prosthetics, and a new sword so that he can fight against the apostles. The story gets messed up when we see Casca with her unborn child who’s apparently a demon child, all because of Femto. After many years of hunting down the apostles, our MC gains a nickname. His nickname is “The Black Swordsman”. He is joined by an elf named Puck on his journey to seek revenge against Femto. Guts and Casca really did struggle a lot with the apostles, they were saved despite being attacked by them again and again.

However, that’s not the end! Guts encounters Griffith at Zodo’s home where Griffith realizes the demon child energy coming from Guts. That’s when Guts decided to take Casca to Puck’s homeland which is full of elfs. In the hometown of elfs, Griffith sends his people and causes chaos.

Moving from one place to another, Guts encountered Flora the Witch at the Village who proved to be of great help. She could nullify the effect of the band of Hawks on them. Flora also gives Guts gets a very powerful armor which strengthens his physical abilities too. Just like that, Guts seems to move from one village to another and his journey continues. He encounters many dangerous species because of Griffith. Now, let me tell you about the Berserk movies! Let’s go!

Berserk Golden Age Arc I – The Egg of the King (2012)

Berserk Golden Age Arc I – The Egg of the King was released in 2012. The story of this movie begins with Guts catching the eye of Griffith as he kills Bazuso during a military activity. The Hawks, after forcing Guts to join their group, were offered to work with the Kingdom of Midland for their hundred year war against the Tudor Empire.

During a military activity, Guts and Griffith together come across a demon named Nosferatu Zod who gets attracted to Griffith’s pendant, aka Behelit. I mean, Zod clearly warned Guts that he will be in trouble if he joined hands with Griffith and he was right afterall. Guts has done many horrifying things for Griffith, yes! He has killed people too! However, he gets scared by his horrible actions.

Berserk Golden Age Arc II – The Battle For Doldrey (2012)

Next comes the Battle For Doldrey. This follows the bond between Casca and Guts while being separated and defending themselves against the attacks of Tudor’s commander named Adon. The fun fact is that Guts defeated all of his men single-handedly while smartly planning the escape of Casca. Guts decided to leave the band of Hawks to avenge Griffith and to come up on his level. He had to take part in a messy battle to seize the Fortress of Doldrey. Guts wins against the Purple Rhinos, on the other hand, Casca lets Adon go. After a month of continuous battle, Guts parts ways with Griffith. How? By defeating him in a battle. That’s how legends or should I say, warriors fight.

After all the catastrophe, Griffith gets trapped in the tower of Rebirth and the members of Hawks are labeled as criminals. What will happen next? Moving on, after months, Guts decide to free Griffith from the Tower of Rebirth and they see that, Griffith is barely alive and he even tried killing himself since he was mentally tortured. When Griffith gets his pendant, a solar eclipse occurs! BOOM! This leads all the people present there to be transported into another dimension.

When Guts gets there, he’s offered to become the final hand of the god, just like Griffith. He accepts the offer. However, this plan fails since Griffith is brought back to life as Femto. On the other hand, Guts and Casca get transported to their own world by the Skull Knight, in such circumstances, Casca ends up losing her sanity and gets hurt by Femto! That scene is very intense and hard to watch. Only people with strong hearts can watch it.

Berserk Ougon Jidaihen III: Kourin (2013)

Since Guts and Casca returned to their own world, they lost track of Griffith, so this movie mainly revolves around the desperation to find Griffith. These circumstances lead Guts to join the band of Hawks again. He had to go to lengths in order to find him. It surely hasn’t been easy. A year has passed and Griffith is still at the Prison!

Berserk: Recollections of the Witch (2017) – OVA

This OVA episode is just a look-back on the Black Swordsman, all of his struggles and how everything went wrong. This episode really does clear out any confusions about the anime itself. The witch named Schierke looks back on the history of Black Swordsman. So, if you’re interested, you can surely watch this OVA. What do you think?

Berserk – Main Characters

Guts

Guts is one of the main characters of the anime, Berserk. He’s also called “The Black Swordsman”. Guts is definitely one of the baddest characters in anime history, he’s a warrior. His sheer determination, physique, and mental stability made him who he is now. He’s really a man who’s constantly fighting his inner darkness. Guts is also known to be cynical and rigid. When he wants something, he makes sure to get it.

He has many abilities like great swordsmanship, physical toughness, and whatnot! We can tell about his strength from the fact that he has been on the battlefield when he was only 9 years old. He turned into an unstoppable warrior due to his intense training. He’s known to honor his reputation as well. He doesn’t really have a purpose in life except for surviving against the intense attacks of Griffith or cleaning up his mess.

Casca

Casca is one of the main characters too since she’s related to Guts. She’s the former commander of the band of Hawks. She’s proved to be a very reliable commander since she leads everyone very smoothly and is just one of the most capable leaders in the anime. She lived on the mountains therefore, she’s quite tough and has abilities that are second to none. Guts is head-over-heels for her. She sometimes loses her sanity but comes right back to her senses. So, I must say she’s strong for holding up in difficult situations.

Casca was born the youngest child out of six children in an abandoned village. She had to go through many tough situations all by herself. She’s quite tough and self–sufficient. Casca has survived many attackers too, that all explains her warrior self, right?

Griffith

Griffith – the true troublemaker in the anime. Griffith is one of the main antagonists in the anime. He always had a single goal which was to take over the whole world. He did accomplish it but Guts shattered his dreams and took them away from him. He didn’t want the wellness of people and that’s why Guts saved the day and even thought of saving Griffith during his difficult times. Isn’t Guts the coolest?

Griffith faced poverty from the start therefore, he might have changed as an adult. That might be why he wanted to take over the world and become the king. Growing up with other poor children, he had higher ambitions. No wonder, he did become the king.

Charlotte

Charlotte is one of the princesses in Berserk. She was trapped by Griffith and his bad intentions. However, she was saved by Guts. He upset Griffith by pretending to seduce her. She’s the princess of Midland who’s socially distant and remains composed all the time. However, she’s strong-willed too. I mean princesses are often trained to handle different situations. Isn’t that right? She was raised by her father the right way! However, she started hating her father ever since he got her involved with Griffith. That’s why she blamed everything on her father.

Skull Knight

Skull Knight is known as one of the most powerful characters in the series. He’s known to be 1000 years old. His past is a mystery and everyone calls him “King” or “Your Majesty”. He has also worn the well-known “Berserker Armor” that strengthens your physique and makes you become an unstoppable warrior. Skull Knight has been involved with Zodd in his past. Dwarf craftsmen have designed his armor at some point in his life too.
